Looking for those nice ambient sounds help out please

If anyone of you have heard of sigur ros/brian eno/thievery corporation/portishead then you know what i mean. What genres/artists/labels/records/cds can i find some of these sounds or atleast tell me what instrument can be used to make these sounds?

alright check it out, this is all you have to do to sound like these guys:

sigur ros: i dont know really anything about them, except they're from like iceland right? You gonna have to talk to bjork or something, maybe dress up all weird and it'll come to you

brian eno: this one's easy. Just be in an all-time band with phil manzanera for a couple years, then buy all the baddest synths ever, and understand them all inside and out, and maybe invent some stuff yourself, and be just about the most creative dude out forever, and boom you're brian eno. feel free to hang out with david byrne and maybe oh I dunno maybe make a 3 1/4 second banger for the richest man alive. done.

thievery corporation: you don't really want to sound like thievery corporation.

portishead: you'll need that french psychedelic cartoon movie soundtrack, a chick with a pretty cool haunting voice, and a mid-90s college dorm audience...Really, all you need is that soundtrack. Boom: portishead.

why dont you wanna sound like thiever corp? I mean its 1:39 am here and they help me get to sleep when my insomnia is acting up.

thievery corporation had that one, that was good, but then they milked it and milked it and milked it some more, and ended up with 2 minute songs that all sounded the same and didn't change...

just try and sound like Eno, that'll keep you busy for the rest of your life...

Get some Lalo Schifrin scores, but not the obvious ones, a jazz guitarist and lots of old analog equipment/synths etc.


Spend a lot of time making breaks of your own to sample, then chop and sample them.



THEN find a chick with a pretty cool haunting voice and you should be well away.

whoa yeah that's the one, and it sounds EXACTLY like instrumental portishead to me...just add some basic scratches over it and boom you're ready for the skinny chick to sing about suicide or whatever

Or hit up the bed bath and beyond type stores, buy some ambient sounds cd's. Also these can be found in misc sections of cd stores.

thievery is kind of shit indeed. Portishead is mostly Rhodes + strings + Beth Gibbons. They sample a lot, then they play it back live with a huge orchestra. So they know about music. They dont come here asking for stupid ambient sounds. If you cant make ambient sounds and lush pads (by pad i dont mean an organ or a rhodes) with your sampler and/or synth, you need to delve into the thing called "sound creation". Its an art itself. Combine that with the knowledge of the 15 basic scales & some typical major and minor chords and some sweet rhythms and youre on your way....!
