Talk and share knowledge on rare records, sources of new samples, vinyl, diggin, etc

bobbybigbeats wrote:most of this stuff we're talking about isn't officially repressed...most all of it is bootleg stuff... the skull snaps bootleg I have is even a gatefold, it sounds really good, all that... I just know that the original band isn't seeing a dime from it (maybe a bad example, since from what I understand they didn't see a dime back in the day), just some guy who was like "man, this record sells for a hundred dollars, i'm gonna press up a bunch on my own and sell them for fifteen bucks a pop on eBay...printing money!"

I've seen that Skull Snaps that your talking about. I'm telling you, if you wanted to, you could scuff up the cover a lil' bit and post that on e-bay and state it's an "OG copy" and you'd prolly get $100.00 plus for it. Now although the person who buys it would be highly disappointed to have a repress with a scuffed up cover, they would still be able to play the "It's A New Day" break and all the other songs on there as clearly as I would. So the only thing I would have over them is that I got an OG??

Represses, reissues...yuck

I mean they are OK if you really want to hear the album in the meantime, but that sentimental value is just not there with reissues. It just may be that I feel different towards my collection than you do. You may look at your albums as pieces just to listens to, where as I treat my collection almost like a baseball card collection, and we all know that a replica Mickey Mantle card made today doesn't have the same value of the original Mantle pressings made back in the day.

Thats just me though.

This thread is pointless. I don't get people who buy records just show off and put in glass in their bedroom. Thats the thing i hate most about record collecting. If you collect breaks and you don't make beats/DJ/bedroom DJ then in my view you shouldn't be collecting breaks. I buy records to play and enjoy and to tell the truth i wouldn't really give a toss about buying an original or reissue. I bought the Skull Snaps reissue and i'm happy with it, why the hell would i need a reissue? Just to brag on Soul Strut? Brag and laugh at the dollar bin guys?

If your loaded, a fan and it means a lot to you to have an OG then go 4 it but my opinion is it's a waste of money paying for an original when there are reissues all over the shop cheap. In my opinion being obsessed about OG copies is a bit anorack. Just look at Madlib, some heads where heartbroken when they found out he buys and is cool with reissues.

digging-for-vinyl and record-collecting are two entirely different things.

you either get it or you don't.

uh, it's been like this since Day One.

I like to think my record has some sort of connection to the actual artist that put it out... even if it's been bought and sold in 20 different transactions since 1969, I like to think that I wouldn't be embarrassed if the artist themselves was looking through my records... Whether or not I can tell in a doubleblind test conducted by the accounting firm of Ernst&Young, I'm not sure...probably the fake will be free of pops and crackles lol... but there is an intrinsic value to the real record that the fake just doesn't have... even an official repress... there is a story to the records, and if you don't care about it, then you don't care about it...but I do.

Those AC Cobra replicas are, on paper, "better" cars than the originals... but I'd want the OG (price tag notwithstanding)...

i dunno, it's like they have a soul... what if the aliens killed your mom and replaced her with a clone, but did a total recall and filled the clone with all your mom's memories and all that, exact copy...that ain't your mom dude!

I can't believe you'd say that about your own mom...

wait, what?

offer still stands: anyone wants to trade my fake skull snaps for your real one, to prove you don't care--pm me lol

im not a big fan of represses but i dj and still play records out, so ill usually cop a repress if i dont want the OG to get beat up while travelling and what not.

about finding an OG skull snaps, man honestly, i think you will find one if you keep on diggin. you might have to start going to other cities in your state and hittin up different spots out there, but i think eventually you will come across one.
i cant tell you how many times ive just sat on buyin a big boy record and then come across one in the field real soon after.

now with that said, sometimes you do have to drop some dough on a joint you may never see again in your life. if you by good fortune come across another copy, then you can sell one.

It's not that I don't care. In my post I said I was thinking of SELLING my original and buying a repress. What I'm sayin' is I don't understand how you didn't start collecting records until the mid/late 90's, and now you playin' yourself paying oodles of dough for something without trying to go out and find it in the dollar bin or as cheap as possible for a few years because "it has a break on it and I want the original" just to bring legitimacy to your collection. That right there is what "digger culture" has come to. You wait for Dusty Fingers/Strictly Breaks to point out breaks, or because DJ Premier, or Pete Rock flipped a drum break/sample, NOW it became inportant. I seen it where Seals & Croft was heavy in the dollar bin until "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See" and dudes was paying $60.00 - $90.00 for it. Or how the Steely Dan LP was always (and still is) in the dollar bin, but dudes was paying mad dough for it because of the Uptown Baby sample. Like I said I pay big dough for stuff you NEVER find in the record stores (and was only pressed once/no reissues available) and even if you saw it you wouldn't even think to cop. With the right connections, an OG Skull Snaps or anything else can be bought/traded for very little.

I pay a water bill every month, so I can shower every day (my girlfriend gets mad if I don't)... That way, I don't have to wait for it to rain... it's the same with records. I can search and search and search, and yeah, maybe whatever it is, it'll pop up somewhere, sometime... but I want to hear it now! And I don't got it, so I'll pay for it. Economists would say I have a "high time preference," and a "high price of leisure." This pair, combined with the fact that no, I do not have every record in the history of the world, means that I will pay someone to gather these records for me. I'll gladly pay for the service. I have been listening to music my whole life, and haven't heard it all...maybe I'm slow, and everyone has just beat me to it...I certainly haven't been listening to stuff like "headless heroes of the apocalypse" my whole life, so when I read about it, I wanted to hear what this 100 dollar record sounded like... (didn't like that one too much, that dude can't sing...good thing I bought a fake one and not sight unseen for some OG, right?) Skull Snaps is really good though, that's a good one the whole way through. I bought the aforementioned repress a few years ago, I wish I could go back in time to whenever you're saying that record was easy to find and cheap...

I'm an adult, I'm not afraid to tell you I like what I like, and I'm interested in what records everyone else is listening to...it just may turn out that I'll like it too. I don't have them all, I don't even know about them all. What should I be checking for right now--since you always have everything first? It's just me, don't worry, nobody else is reading this...

this is real right here
im also for payin good dough for records you wont ever see again and cant cop the repress. i know not too many people got the joint and/or arent up on the samples im tryin to flip.

like i said keep diggin and you may find one in the field. thats the whole point. ebay made things pretty easy and changed the term diggin.

fuc!< its a new day. skull snaps is just an example but i think 'tresspassing' is my favorite cut on that album. its not about just breaks, im not trying to spend money on an lp that has one good break or sample that only lasts for a few seconds. im not even producing much rtight now, im just trying to up my vinyl collection. im cool w/ the discussion here but you have to recognize im in a small town. the dollar bins here are beat.
as far as spending $$ i dont care if premo sampled it or not, if the lp has good tunes on it that i can just listen or mix then cool. ive been record collecting since 93' when i was 15, im not on any major player status, alot of my few earlier purchases were hiphop not breaks and such, I was more into tapes and rocking graf..

at this point im willing to sacrifice just a few cool points on the digging end of the game so i can simply better my selection of tunes.

:?: back to the original question, besides ebay does anyone have a good site for lp shopping?
