New Midi Keyboard Question

I just purchased a MIDI keyboard to use with my 1K. I got the USB Midi keyboard hooked up to my MAC (garageband) and I got Midi out of the keyboard going into Midi in of MPC...But When I try to record sound into MPC, I dont get anything. What am I doing wrong?

do you have an audio cable going into the mpc's record in input? if so, what is that cabled plugged into on the other side? if all you got connecting things is midi cables, unfortunately you wont ever get sound into the mpc as midi is not sound, just data.

No, unfortunately I do not. Where would the Audio cable going into MPC record in be coming from? Remember Im using garage band software instruments to play sounds on my midi keyboard. I want to get the sounds from garageband using the midi keyboard into the MPC basically

That last link needs to be an instrument cable from the laptops audio out to the line in / record in on the MPC.

You see, you send the MIDI data to garage band and it turns that data into note messages in the virtual instruments. now, you need to carry that audio signal from the laptop and into the MPC through an audio cable. The way you have it now, you would only be able to send MIDI data from garage band to the MPC, or using what is called MIDI-Through, send data that originated from the keyboard through the laptop and to the MPC. This is helpful if you already have samples loaded on the MPC because you can then fire them off using MIDI from a keyboard instead of hitting the pads.

Does this make sense?

just want to add this - midi is data, not sound. the sound is generated by the virtual instruments in garage band. the virtual instruments know what notes to play and how loud to play them because of the midi 'messages' sent from the keyboard each time you press a key.

First off I just wanna say thanks for the help. But If thats the case that I need a instrument cable to connect from laptop to record in of MPC, then there is basically no need for MIDI going into MPC, since I cant hear anything through MPC unless I click MODE then RECORD on MPC. The way I have it setup is USB->Laptop, seeing as how its a midi-usb keyboard, so it connects to computer via USB. Then on the Keyboard It has a MIDI OUT port, which I ran to the MPC MIDI IN port. I understand that MIDI is no sound, its just DATA, so doing that will not bring any sound into MPC, but the Record Into MPC doesnt make any sense to me

np mate. so, usb from keyboard to laptop. the midi is just goin over the usb wire. now, audio cable from laptop to mpc to get the sound into the mpc. you're right, the midi to the mpc is not needed unless you have a non-audio purpose for it like triggering events on the mpc.

Damn so that really sucks. If I had a drum pattern made already I wouldnt be able to play nothing of the midi keyboard over it and record it, I would have to press MODE then RECORD and record it by itself? Damn, I thought I would be able to do it just like how you would with a normal Keyboard or something.

i cant really answer that question as im not too familiar with the mpc yet. all im sayin is if you want the sounds from garageband to get into the mpc, you gotta send them to the mpc thru an audio cable or, if you got a compact flash card or hard drive in your mpc, record the sounds in garageband and export to wave files and then load that into the mpc. either way, it wont go across the midi cable. sorry mate.

you can record the midi notes into the mpc just fine, and it will trigger them in garage band when you play it back, but none of those sounds will be IN the mpc unless you sample them.

what you want to do is your keyboard's midi out into the mpc, then the mpc's midi out into your computer to garage band and set the mpc to do soft-thru

^that sounds more like it. Thank you. So In order to go Out MPC back to laptop into garageband I'd need a midi cable to go out MIDI OUT on MPC and the other end USB to go into laptop? Thats the confusing thing, the connection going out of MPC MIDI.. help

you could also go back out from the Mac to one of the other MPC inputs and sync to Garage Band or sync GB to the MPC (if Garage Band has it's own clock, which I would imagine it does though I've never actually used it)
