i am not a pro by any stretch. more a hobbiest of sorts. but i have had no problems running various audio applicaions on my home made pc that i retired last year, or the one i am using now which is a 400 dollar acer with a 1.75ghz amd sempron with 2gb of ram and a 160gb hard drive + 250gb hard drive (just added the second one).
if you're not making a professional studio, you'll probably be ok with a laptop from dell but if possible, i'd suggest uninstalling any bloatware and trialware right away, read some tutorials for configuring windows xp for audio and if u can get a nice amount of ram in there you should be ok.
i've read numerous times that ram is more important that cpu in a music station, but obviously you wouldnt want to run a 500mhz machine.
in short, do what you can within your means and if you got credit with dell and you find that to be somewhat of a miracle, then god bless ya get that laptop and make your studio work the way you want it to.
besides, can't you always upgrade down the road?
