note variation slider?

what up people, just got a mpc 2000xl for pretty cheap...pickin up almost everything pretty quick but i got 1 question...

is there a trick to using the note variation slider? i cant figure out how to get it to do anything...if somebody could break down a simple way for me to check out if it works that would be great, hopefully its not broken!

hold down shift and press the After key... i think thats what its called.. right above the slider. should bring up a screen. you can control tuning, filtering, decay, and one other thing i cant think of right now with it.. maybe attack?. so move the slider up and down while pressing a pad to hear what it can do i recently found out what it does aswell, after reading the manual
