Re.- Copyrighting B4 Putting the beat 4 sale

Hi everyone.
Am new to the board. I would like to know one thang. How does one copyright a beat (instrumental) before putting it up for the public like in Myspace?
Does one simply send the beat to himself (dummie approach) or are there other better ways?
What do ya'll do before posting your work to the public/net?
