If you don't need a turntable or a monitor—this probably means you do not want to deal wih a computer either—then you can get away with just one synth, like a 61-key Yamaha Motif or Korg Triton.They're loaded with tons of electronic/hip hop sounds that have been on countless hits in the past few years. Most serious producers I have read about have at least one these, they're kind of a classic. Hope this helps.
