I love the splashscreen. At least you can add a little personalization to the beast.

I feel you. I love the Splashscreen too. But I'm willing to part in order to gain more things that will help me tame the beast.
Seriously, the only time I even pay attention to my splashscreens anymore is when I'm showing someone who doesn't have the JJ OS. LOL. I've just grown past it. And as far as personalizing, I'm waitin' to hear if Forat is doin' 1000's now. That's the customizing I'm talkin' about. Its an art what he does with these MPC's. Just beautiful!
So that's why we're here. Progress. Its a small step, but its a start.

you give me the list of the replacement features, then we'll talk...

I can't imagine that'd free up too much room, getting rid of the little bitmap at the start...but I'm no japanese jenius, i'm an american idiot, so what do i know???

i would love to see an OS that dumped ALL the fluff, and by that i mean the effects (all are hot garbage), duplications that have since been improved (old program mode and probably a few others).

use the free space for ideas that have been kicked around here for a long time, specifically:

1. jahromes list of things that old mpc's had that didnt make it to the new wave

2. non-destructive chops (intelligent duplicate-based editing a la asr10)

3. freestyle chop whilst sampling as proposed by someone here

The splashscreen is not required to work with your MPC, but it's a nice feature to personalize your machine. Plus, I don't know if removing this feature provides much free codespace.

A small amount of codespace can turn into a small improvement that makes a big difference. And plus getting rid of that and getting a good response from the improvements can start a chain reaction of other things bein' tossed for better things also. Things that take up more codespace can be thrown away and replaced by things that are better and bigger in codespace. But we gotta start somewhere guys. Look @ the bigger picture, don't just fix your attention on losing SS's, think about gaining other things, more important than a nice but toy feature.
Anything that helps workflow is better than SSs. I look @ this as leading towards the removal of OPM. But if no one wants to take anything out than we're stuck again. Screw that! Lets make some good changes to a great OS!

we are VERY close to the end of the line with the JJ OS. with the latest update he actually pulled something out just to make room for bug fixes. there's not much left he can add to the OS without pulling stuff out.

once he has all of the bugs fixed, hopefully he can make some new additions by pulling out some of the stuff we've mentioned in this thread. those that really want splash screens & the old program mode can just stick with the last OS that has those things in it and everyone else can go ahead and upgrade to get the new stuff. that way everybody is happy.

but clearly there is no way forward without sacrifice. short of putting a new chip in the MPC, the only way to get new stuff is to give up some old stuff. the best thing JJ could do in my opinion is to make multiple OS's, as has been mentioned before. 2 or 3 different ones geared towards different things (composition, live performance, etc.)

I agree with Sooty a lot. But I think JJ might be overwhelmed by multiple OSs. That's bugs, updates, and requests x's 3!

I wouldn't mind tossing everything away, which is cosmetic, except for the screenshot feature, unless the final version is out ;) I really need that still to finish my manual ;)

Yeah, I was thinkin' about the Screenshots and then you popped into mind Stan. I thought the exact same thing: after the OS is bug free than we can dump the screen shots for more stuff. But if there is more stuff than you need the screen shots to explain that stuff. So they might be here to stay. LOL.
But I can say this, if we get rid of OPM and stick with GPE, than we can also get rid of something else that would free up more space. You guys should know what other feature I'm talkin' about deleting. I might be speakin' too soon, but gettin' rid of one will allow us to get rid of 2 which will give us way more space for stuff!
