Do you dig for samples or good listenable records to sample?

Hi, just wondering when you dig do you guys aim to dig for samples (testing a record hearing a nice horn stab, looking to see if theres a electronic organ, moog, etc at the back, etc), or do get samples out of your head and you look for good songs/albums overall and sample from what you like? e.g. artists, etc.

I know some people do both but is digging for a sample top priority when you dig?





unrelated - why do people look at you when you're testing out a record in a charity shop with a portable turntable like they having an encounter with a UFO or something? The attention i get when i dig with it really puts me off. I just want to be in my own world diggin for shyt

I buy records that I wanna listen to. If I hear a sample, then fine. But it's not the reason I buy records.

I don't really listen to records just to listen to them (often) when I bust out the wax or dig I'm hunting for heat...If I come across a record and it doesnt have something I'd sample then it's dead to me....

I used to collect any wax I could get my hands on, but I sooned realized I was setting myself up for disaster lol...now I'm on some quality over quantity...If I can't sample it, it doesnt belong in my archive....

in the charity shops you get looks because the records are 25cents or something so its not even worht the time of playing it on the portable..

i collect for listening. the sampleable stuff just comes naturally after tthat..

same here... the whole reason mpc's and sample-based music appeal to me is I can Be John Bonham or whatever... all my favorite parts of all my favorite songs at once...

once I run out of records that have good music on them, then i'll start looking for random sounds with no listenability lol....

again i guess this is what you get when you post in a "crate diggers" forum where people ask about trading samples, trading mp3 files, mp3 blogs, and things irrelevant to "crate diggers" i see why places like soulstrut and even the breaks look down on this forum....

i've been way into sampling obscure psych rock lately, but i don't really listen to it that much on it's own. for listening pleasure, i get into jazz (more high $), dub, hip hop,soul, etc. So i'll look in pretty much every genre. if i'm listening to a jazz record and it has a dope base line, obviously i'm gonna sample it. my production sound lately isn't jazz though.

I didn't ask what artists people are sampling and if you think this forum is so garbage then why do you post on here? If you feel the Strut is better then go there.

I see Soulstrut as more of a hardcore collectors site. Cats are friendlier on here i think. Lots of useful knowledge dropped. On Soul Strut is all this '**** soul, buy sum Isralei, polish prog psych funk' attitude, i know a few Polish artists but i'm not ready to get that into it yet, i've still got to learn a lot. Wtf, some noobs ain't even know who Billy Cobham is never mind some forgotten polish band.

You aren't gonna find that stuff in a UK shop without paying up (in my experience). I don't want this site to be like the 'Strut. I don't really wanna hear f*ck MPC forums go to Soulstrut in a place where it's seems mostly young diggers in the shallow end and forum regulars.

As long as digging forums exist noobs new to all of this will be interested in what other cats are digging. Why have people got to be so angry towards noobs sometimes? It's just like an art forum where beginners will ask what kind of paints people use. You just gotta drop a few the Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis of the scene and tell them to figure it out for themselves from there, e.g. Herbie played with miles, Grant Green appeared on same album, etc, etc

thats exactly what i was like before. I'll admit i haven't been doing this for very long. I used to before just get any wax and see what i could do with it. Now i know quality is better than quantity. I'd now rather have one good overall record than loads of shit records with a break on them.

I go for the old orchestrated "pop" or "easy listening" jawns... stuff like Hugo Winterhalter goes Jypsie, Enoch Light, etc. Most of the record is wack as hell, but there are always really moody loops and one shots without any drums on those records. I feel like a lot of cats who are true diggers look over those joints in their rush to get to the some played-out, over sampled Temptations record or some shit.

I buy for listening/ djing purposes mostly now. But occasionally, I buy random stuff without listening, just for that odd chance of fire...

Sometimes it works out and i find a new artist that I like or a break, or samples. Sometimes I'm stuck with piss poor decisions.

NO it's just good muisc is allthe fact that it's been sampled is a plus to me, cause it then makes me think of the song that sampled it and vise versa.

im diggin for samples been doing that since 2003 so been thru various stages but look for samples and in the process i obviously find records that aint got much in the way of samples but i still keep em cos i enjoy the record.

but i regulary go thru my records to see what i got and if i like the sound of the record if i cant use it for samples and i dont enjoy the type of music on it i just trade it for something that interests me.

cos if the record dont click with me i wont be bothered work with it and find samples off it.

right now i got my collection down to around 250 records but they all some shit that i could sample or that i enjoy listening.
