Quickest way to make a program from many samples?

I just got some new samples for my MPC3000 and the way they are layed out in programs is: Kicks, Snares, Hats, etc.. When I load say, one of the Kick programs, I end up with a bunch of Kick samples mapped across all my pads and four banks. I can't load up a bunch more programs at once because there are too many samples for the MPC.

My question is; what is the quickest way to audition those initial Kick samples, pick the ones I want to keep, and discard the rest to make room for the next batch of samples I want to load up and audition. Also, can I quickly assign the keeper samples to certain pads in the process without having to memorize their names and scroll through the whole lot to assign them?

You have to load them to listen to them, but kicks don't take up too much space so it'll be allright. I often load 30 bass-tones each time I'm working with a beat, and then delete the 29 I don't use. I also think you'll have to assign them after you have them loaded.

The best way for you to do this would be to
A: load all samples
B: decide which pad for the kick sample
C: assign a kick sample
D: scroll through all the samples till you feel the one you have currently assigned to that pad.
Then you hit another pad and do the same thing with your other samples.

Another fast way is to get the MPC-editor for PC or Mac and in there you can listen to .snd samples and assign them to pads. Some people have complained about problems with the program for Mac, but I havent had any problems. In those programs you can also convert .waw-files to .snd-files.

Thanks for tip. That is a much better way to do it with assigning pads and then scrolling through the samples.

The problem is, how do I now delete the samples I'm not using to make room to load more. Do I have to memorize the Kick samples I decided to keep, and delete all the others individually before I can load up the big snare drum, and hat programs? Seems to be a bit tediuous...is there a faster way?

You just delete them. Change the first letter in your sample to A or Z, this way it will be the last you'll delete as samples are arranged alphabetic.

Be shure that you have 32MB installed. I really don't get how you would have to delete sounds to get room for more unless you have little memory installed.

BTW you can also save the sample you want to use to a floppy disk (or any disk), and then turn off and on your MP, clearing it for all samples, plus you have saved the one you wanted to use!

I have 32 Megs of RAM, but as far as I can remember the MPC3000 can only hold 128 samples at any given time no matter how much RAM space is left. I bought some sample sets that have 64 samples of say Kicks mapped across all the pads and banks. Once I audition and pick the Kick samples, I only have room for one another 64 snare sample program and then I have to delete some sounds.

Those two suggestions will help speed things up though.
