MPC500 Vs vintage MPC2000XL

I want to buy either one of these new...



Or a second hand one of these...



I am really stuck and don't know what to choose as i have very limited knowledge on them at the moment. Any help on the following questions would be appreciated.

Do the vintage MPCs sound any different to the modern ones that take compact flash?

Which is the most portable and light in weight MPC or isn't there much difference? is it the MPC500 the most portable one?

Can you produce without beats and just samples on the both MPCs?

What sort of music can you or can't you make on a MPC500 and a vintage MPC2000XL?

What is the build quality like between a vintage MPC2000XL and a new MPC500?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of both machines?

Which one would you go for?

EDIT: I have just seen the new MPC1000 - is this a good machine to get compared to the others?

Get a marker, like a sharie or something, then circle where the search fuction is on your monitor so you wont forget.

2kxl will take compact flash if you get the upgrade

MPC 500 is the most portable, runs on batteries, but realistically, if you are going to use this in a DJ type live setup, you will have readily available plugins. An mpc 1000 will be better suited for live performance

2kxl and 500 is like night and day. 500 is a tiny little handheld thing, 2kxl is huge.

I'd personally go for the 2kxl if I had to choose between it and the 500. It's like comparing a Fantom X to a casio keyboard with built in speakers.

I want to make some ambient music too, can i do this on an MPC? i am a beginner to this which is why i ask.

The 2000XL sounds wicked. I'ts either that or a new MPC1000 - but the build quality looks better on the XL. I've seen some MPC1000s for sale where the knobs have come off. Thanks for your help mate.

Thanks mate, money IS an issue really seeing as i'm a beginner i don't want to spend too much on it all yet. I want to spend $1000 maximum at the moment. I'm a bit of a luddite at heart which puts me off the new machines and if they have OS problems that would annoy me but if the possibilities with a 1000 are greater then maybe i should consider that. Forgive the indecisiveness - this is a tough decision for me.

i had the same choice a few months ago i got the 500 hated it now im in the process of getting a 2000xl

2k's are vintage now?
