Do the MPC1000 drum pads transmit MIDI?

I would think this is a dumb question and of COURSE the pads transmit MIDI, but to now I have yet to get any love or MIDI signal coming into Logic when playing the pads. The MIDI cable is hooked up correctly- its still able to start Logic playing when I sync it...

Basically I want to use Logic as my sequencer and the MPC1000 as my dedicated sampler, but so far have only been able to sequence MPC samples by triggering a separate MIDI keyboard. The action on the keyboard leaves a lot to be desired compared to the drum pads....

Help?

set the track to the appropriate MIDI out port and channel (look down and right on the MAIN screen).
