DISK READ ERROR! FLOPPY DRIVE..

Hello, anyone had this problem; ?

I turned the mpc on and started loading a beat i made, then it said disk read error and i cudnt move anything, so i had to just turn it off.
Then i turned it back on and inserted the os disk and it now comes up with disk read error every time!! Cant get on it...anyone know whats wrong and HOW i fix it? And where can i get a fuse for the back where the Zip drive goes so i can install one of those?

Any help apreciated as my sampler is out of action, which means i have no life...

I'd open up the machine and see if the floppy drive cable isn't loose or anything.

Is this a classic or an xl?

It seems weird to me that you got this problem all of a sudden. If the heads of the floppy drive start to fail, they don't cause a disk write error everytime.

Maybe a blown floppy disk controller or something.

If you have the XL, just get a card reader and be happy for the rest of your life. Installing a card reader on the classic is harder but doable.

Well, if you open up your unit, theres a ribbon cable going from the floppy drive to the main pcb. Check if it's still connected right and not loose.

A card reader reads cards (well duh ). You can use CF (compact flash) cards to save and load your stuff. The installation is not that easy if you don't know about electronics and soldering. There's a thread floating round here about installing a card reader in a classic. It's more reliable than zips or floppies.

I don't have experience with a classic but what do you mean by 'sort the back'? Doesn't it come standard with SCSI? If so all you need is a cable and an external SCSI zip drive no?

ok, i opened it up, nothing loose, all fine, dusted and cleaned..floppy drive still buggered. Only reason its killin me is cause i cant use it as i cant upload the os!!!

i have the same disk read error problem. and i had things saved on that faulty disk that i really need (the drive reads every other disk just fine, exept that one) is there anything to be done to save the data on that disk or should i just forget about it?

ive had that, i dont know if i shud try the disk that originally fuked up again when i get a new drive...try it on your mates mpc? heh

tried it with another drive and it appears that the shell of the disk is damaged. so i need to transfer the inside of the disk to another shell. i'll let you know how that worked out, in case someone would have the same problem in the future.

I think we're screwed. I have a disc that allows access to about half of the song data. The rest is gone, I guess.

I now back up everything, and name tracks, sounds, and the like with greater care.

yeah, save your stuff on a couple floppy disks each time...b/c floppys (even ones that you buy fresh new) might not work on the mpc...usually i buy the Memorex joints..and out a 10 pack, maybe 3 don't work properly. (i don't save seq. or anything on a floppy tho'..i got a zip)

It may just be your floppy disk. Floppy disks are "iffy" anyway. Sometimes they go bad for absolutely no reason. If I were you, i'd invest in a card reader
