Track Assign and Track Mute...

If I were to create a sequence with a few samples, along with a kick, snare, and hi-hat, maybe a bassline and some cymbals, how would I be able to mute certain parts of the sequence? (i.e. take out the kick and snare momentarily, then let them come back hard). The way I have been doing it is by using the overdub with the play/start, and manually holding the Erase button, waiting for the point in the song that I want to remove something, and then hitting the pad that I want to delete. I haven't really messed with track mode, I've basically just made a few sequences, put them in song mode, saved the song as a sequence, and edited it the way I just told you. Is there a better way to do this?
(yes I have read the manual and e-mailed tech support at AkaiPro, got nothing) Any ideas? I would appreciate any help that you guys could give me.

Track Mute is what you need. You need to assign the pads you want to a specific track and then arm the track mute button, then you can tap the pad and the corresponding track that is associated with that pad will be muted.

When I started with the 500, I never used it, now I use it for every sequence.

When you assign samples to different tracks, I'm guessing you have to rename them. Is that right? I still can't get this thing to do it.
