i've been using this to program/edit my non-drum program tracks for a while there.

i find the note shifting capabilities here really smooth. it operates with the same principle as in 6 pad grid edit, but you can see way more at one time.

excellent for editing sample chops. gives you access to duration and Velocity. all my sample chops are now Note On w/ alternate loop set on and programmed to qlink layer. very quick and easy workflow.

anybody else doing this and have any pointers?

k let me see if i can drunkenly explain why i like viewing my drum patterns in midi track mode.

foremost, realize that every note inputed that resides within our mpc is governed by a "NOTE ON LINK FUNCTION DATA." this is stuff like "ATTACK = X" or "LAYER = X" etc. or filter, etc. all that jazz.

realize that the only drum qlink function i ever use anymore is LAYER since i chop from breaks and use the different parts of the break to create my drums (varient kicks, snares)

so predominantly, what i'm controlling is TIMING, more so than VELOciTY (though i deal with that as well, you'll notice that most of the stuff in my demo file is all 127 velocity.

regardless, this is why i find midi grid edit so appealing.

1 - you can see all the drum info at one time. no "6 pad grid edit" where you can't see the rest of your sequence

2 - the note nudging is sooo easy. scroll to your note and hit EDIT, then navigate to the TIMING field...nudge your note and watch it move in realtime! fking astonishing.

we are 100% spoiled by this incredible code. i continue to find new ways to amaze myself with just how powerful it is in terms of NOTE PLACEMENT.

Thanks for the tip. I've known that you could switch views from the drum grid to midi grid for samples but I never really used midi view unless I was working with my synth. I usually just move events around in the drum grid mode by deleting the note and then increasing the quantize to get more detail and then reentering the note where I want it. The midi view might be a better option for that if the edit is quicker for moving things around. I'll try that when I get back to the MPC.

MAKE THE DAMN VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By earwolf Thu Sep 13, 2007 3:17 pm
seriously though - this doesnt even need to be edited...just set the cam going for 10 mins, do what you, explain as you go. then bung it up uncut on youtube...then just WATCH the reaction :)

we can put up with any coughs splutters or weirdness...the pros of that FAR outweigh the cons of not seeing this shyt in action

just video everything you do from now. oh wait maybe not everything
