Ok i have an mpc 1k with an older form of the jjos. My questions is (after watching the DJ shadow, Cut Chemist, Numark Pushing buttons video) how are they setting up the functions of the pads where the sample will play in its entirety until the same pad is pressed then the sample starts over again instead of being layerd. So for simplification purposes he (the dj) presses the pad and the sample plays (obviously one shot) then he presses the pad again and again and each time the sample is played from the beginning WITHOUT it being layered on top of each other.

mute groups or a MONO program

Or Mono just that voice in the program. Just learned that purpose of the voice mono/poly option not too long ago. Sweet feature. The rest of your samples can overlap each other, but that sample will cut itself off if voice is set to mono and pad is pressed over and over while its sample still plays.

I just realized how much of a newbie I still am. LOL.

do these settings also change the way samples get cut off?

the reason I ask is because I chopped a sample up and when I try to record a seq that had some other sounds playing, it would cut some of the sounds out.

I find it hard to believe I would be maxing out the polyphony on the MPC1k

any ideas on what to check?

Make sure your program type is Poly and not mono. Make sure you have no Mute groups or targets set also. And make sure the voice or voice overlap is set to Poly too.

thanks for the quick reply.
I'll be back on the mpc here in a few and will doublecheck all of those settings!

i don't have my mpc sitting with me so if i explained it i wouldn't know what to refer to everything as. but look in the manual. the mute group, changing a single pad from poly to mono, and making the whole program poly or mono can all have different effects on how shit plays, it depends on what you want exactly.

hereo:

yeah, so I verified that the settings are correct

voice overlap: poly
mute group:off
mute target:off

Still does the same thing...

EducatedHands:
is this the same thing you are talking about in this menu? or is it a completely different area within the MPC that I need to verify?

actually... dang-it I think I figured it out. well the end result of what I needed, but not the "cause"

on the pgm: window (has sample/filter/params/note/lfo) for options.

I verified the settings that were mentioned, but then see there is a setting "play" and it was set to mono. I changed it to poly and that resolved it.

what's odd is that the single note I was trying to get to record was already recorded. so when I set it to poly it played it, when I set it to mono it didn't. that's the only sound from that pad bank that was being triggered. Am I missing something here as to why it wasn't working?

man! I hope I am explaining this correctly.

thanks for the help.

That's what I was talking about. Mono Pgm allows 1 pad to be played @ a time, if another pad is triggered, it will cut off the sound of the current pad bein' played.
Poly pgm allows as many pads to be played @ one as your hard/software allows (in our case, 32 voices @ a time).

Glad you got it working.
