i think the sound quality is irrelevant.
yes rjd2 does use the xl a lot.
his music sounds dope - so what about quality then?
the XL has a wave form for chopping that the 3000 doesnt have
as far as sampling is concerned,
use the midi function on the XL and you can record live over sequences.

i think it is a well built machine.
the sampling time is great and it is very simple to use the zone function in edit mode and slice up to 16
I have heard the 2500 has glitches.
if you bought an MCD XL you would get compact flash, but considering you already use old equipment you are fully in the know with what you would be getting in terms of memory and storing your work.

check the price over an xl compared with a 2500
xl's are built to last... the more modern you get paradoxically the more problems you encounter.
i only make beats i havent got onto live yet... but i intend to..
live recording is enough for me... loading and using the banks on the xl is fine with me.. but i do understand where you are coming from wanting to use instruments directly in.
the XL would be a smart decision... but the 2500 has a few more options perhaps that you specifically request
