aight been at this for a quick minute. and like a fool it jus dawned on me.. part of being iLL is gettin my own samples straight and grimey off my records..like yall be doing..

i haven't done it yet but i'm imagining its gon be a bear.. to keep track of.

so i wanted to see how yall be doing it and tryin to get a brainstorm going on..

i mean to get a drum and jus call it hard kick and all that. but uh what happen's like months or a year later and u feelin that kick and your like yo i need to resample that one for a better mix or something and then u have no idea where u got it..

i mean do u organize in a folder by song name, album name or jus let me know how yall be doing it...

maybe jus hearin from yall will spark somethin off for me.

keep it peace..

I used to have different floppys with Kicks, Snares, etc., but it became to many disks.

I always include the song title name in the filename of every sample, like if I sample a kick from a song called "Dope Song" it will be named DOPESONK (K for Kick) or DOPESOLK and DOPESORK if I have saved both sides of a sample.

I have recently begun to make a library on my Mac via floppys and my USB floppy drive, and then I make folders by
- sound (Kick/Snare/Bass etc.)
- artists name
- album name
- the file, which has the song title, ex: DOPESONK

But I only do this with samples I come over that I don't use for a beat. I back up every beat via floppy's as well, so I can always grab a kick from the beats folder.

I have folders on my PC for every artist I sample. This started to get a little out of hand as sometimes I'll sample like ten different records in a day. So now I have a folder called 2007, then inside that all the months of the year, and then inside that the folders with artist names. I then name it something close to what it is, like the instrument etc. Then, when I put these into my MPC I write down what artist the sample came from so that I don't forget. I'm glad I took the extra few minutes to do it this way, because before I'd have tons and tons and tons of randomly named samples in a big folder which just got crazy out of hand. Now it's somewhat organized and easy to find something I'm looking for quickly.

Oh, I also have a folder for solo snare, and kick shots etc.

-save to zip in files per song
-make kits and load as needed
-sample each time as needed or to get a better sample for each song(for lazy headz like me)

NAMING SAMPLES
-name of artist JAMES BROWN= JB. KICK=KIK togetther it's JBKIK,JBLOOP,JBhihat....so on so on.

STORING RECORDS
-label the record with a sticky note that say's BREAK/DRUM/SAMPLE
:what track it's on: :who used it: :yr it was made:
