so is something wrong with my MPC or do I have to do some serious kung fu on my pads?

well mine does that to, i figured i was just hitting it wrong, so i worked around that and just hit the pads more straight and solid, and i do that from now on, with no problems....

my 2kxl does that aswell, i think its supposed to be like this so that you can tap it quickly without "missinng" anything.

Would it be fairly simple to change the pads and sensors yourself? Backlight? These are the items I would lke to change on my 3k. Sodering necessary?

Well, homie, if you read what Swift Ikarus wrote you would probably understand what i mean. Then my 2kxl's pad sensor is **** up aswell, aswell the 3 other mpc's ive tried.. weird..

All the times I have heard of this happening it's the pad sensor 9x's out 10. I have had 7 MPC's and never had this happen ever. Not unless you hit the pads like retard.
