Beating a dead horse ...

I know I have asked this question before but please could anybody out there who managed to connect a scsi harddisk (preferably larger then 4.5G) to an mpc2000xl come forward and pm or explain stoopid me the exact procedure to get it working. My brand new MAXTOR ATLAS 10k IV refuses to format when connected to the mpc2000xl (os 1.14) instead I get an error 0000:D197 and the MPC freezes. All the other scsi devices connected work fine (ZIP, CDROM). I have searched the forum, googled, hell I even mailed akai support (they don't answer).

Im sure I heard somewhere that it could only handle up to 4.5 gb, and thats what I have ordered, but what do I know Im a newbie.

The MPC can recognize partitions with a maximum size of 1 gig which i t creates automatically when you format. It identifies these partitions by naming it first, with the SCSI ID number of the drive, and secondly with a letter.
example, looking at your disk display, it would say:

SCSI 1A, for your first 1 gig partition

The maximum number of partitions is 26. Because of the letters in the alphabet.
1A
1B
1C
1D
etc... each for 1 gig on your drive.
I have 2 18.3gig drives on SCSI id's 1 & 2. Therefore I have 38 partitions.

@ ej1-b18c5r: I understand what you're saying but I simply cannot format the friggin disk, but this might have to do with the fact that my harddisk is bigger than 26Gb (26 partitions of 1 gig).

So it seems like I'll have to find myself a smaller harddisk.

it's also possible that the drive is not compatible, I think you can email akai for a list of compatible drives

Personally, when I saw it, I just had to block it out....whoever that guy is, the look in his eyes is just plain spooky!!!

But anyway...your drive....what kind of drive is it?
Even if you're drive is bigger than 26 gigs. I think what the MPC does is just ignores that space. Like it's not there, because it can't identify it. I've never tested it to be sure, but maybe the drive compatibility is your issue.

It's not just the face and the banana, but the chick is looking like a dude, very suspect indeed!
