Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By JHD316 Sun Sep 23, 2007 5:03 am
I looked around on the forums and on the web and was not successful in finding what wires i need in order to hook up my card reader to my 2000xl.
I go an PCD47 card reader from a friend but it had no wires and i have moded my power cable from my older computer, but with the scsi cable i am unsure of which im suppose to get. Can someone please help me out in which scsi internal cable i am suppose to use. and where i could get one. thanks

it's a 50 pin internal SCSI ribbon cable. there are hundreds of places to get these. try your local mom and pop computer store. usually if they have it, they will probably just give it to you for free since not too many people still use SCSI.

Read up on how to install it:

I am in the same situation (have a PCD47B) but i don't have the power cable or the SCSI cable. Where would i get the power cable? and what type do i need?

Thanks.

Thanks for that. Cool.

I haven't opened my MPC 2000XL yet - to be honest i am a bit scared to - but is the data and power cable going to my floppy drive the same as what i need for the Card Reader? I was just wondering if i could unplug them both from the floppy disk and then put them on the Card reader... i'm sure it won't be that easy though.

Check your jumper connections on the PCD-47b. Those where a nightmare to figure out for me. There should be an illustation on the unit to show how to hook up the card reader to a SCSI ID#. I got my card reader on SCSI ID's 3,4,5 and the internal hard drive at 0.

Also make sure your card reader is a reader and a writer. if not, you will have to change the firmware to write to it.

The power cable will be different. It's a bigger power connector like the one on the left of the picture:

You won't be able to use the floppy cable with the SCSI drive. It's too small. Search for an internal IDC50 pin SCSI ribbon cale.

In the complex world of SCSI connections, IDE and all things MPC2KXL the first thing you must understand is the Limitations that come with using older hardware. Secondly is understanding SCSI, which can be a ****.

Put simply, NO, you can not... IDE is the more common, less expensive brother of SCSI (the format required).

The only available SCSI Card Readers that are proven to work in the MPC2KXL (to my knowledge) are the PCD-15, PCD-17, PCD-19, PCD-25, PCD-47, and PCD-47B.

Not to say their aren't ones out there, but the first rule of dealing with the MPC 2000/2000XL is to understand that older hardware has limitations.

Do not expect the PCD-50 or higher to work... keep your eye open on ebay to find one... or scavange online... from there your set.
