digi oo1

Whut's up ya'll. Do any of you have digi oo1? If so, can i have 24 track recording and playback,and mixing, and editing on something simplel like a dell pentium 3, or do i absolutely need a mac g-4? also how much ram will i need to upgrade to ?

Track count in PT.LE/001 has nothing to do with Mac vs. PeeCee. Although Mac is the industry standard... Also, PT 6.0 has just been released for Mac, which gives Mac a serious advantage. If you get a 001, you can use it on your PeeCee and get a Mac later and then use it on that. If you get a Mac, I highly recomend that you get a dual processor G4 for maximum performance and plugin count.

Regardless of which platform you use, the 001 has a maximum track count of 32tracks....period. LE=Limited Edition... With the 001 you can have a maximum of 18 inputs simultaneously. 8 analog inputs, 8 optical (digital) adat lightpipe inputs, and 2 spdif (digital) inputs. This can only be acomplished with at digital mixer. Otherwise, you are limited to the 8 analog inputs.

i been hangin out on the www.digidesign.com web page and i own the m box but youll be shock to see that pc's are doing very well....amd xp is very strong and putting up numbers too

A good friend of mine uses PTLE/001 on a PC and it is very stable on XP. I do have nothing against PC's, I just think MAC is better for audio......

according to a digidesign salesperson i got to talk to, their compatibilities are pretty conservative, so if youve got something slightly below what theyve listed, itll still work, but with less tracks/automation/plug ins.

I have a PC running XP with a P4 processor (1.6 Mhz) & 512MB DDR. I'm using Pro Tools LE 5.3.1 for multi-track recording. I can use a lot of (dry)tracks comfortably. I'll start getting problems when I add plug-ins. Pro Tools freezes up and asks me to turn off plug-ins when my track count is high and I start adding a lot of plug-ins. This brings up the question "Is the MAC a better platform to run multi-track recording programs with a lot of plug-ins?" I've heard advice from adding an external hard drive to just adding more ram. KOOL, I can't answer your question cause I'm having my own issues, but I would go with a NEW Mac G4. They ain't expensive for nothing.

The is no difference between Mac and PC for running the digi 001. If you use a gang of plug-ins it will freeze just the same on either system. The main reason you'll want to go with the Mac would be for the available plugins. You can buy the plugins for the PC system, but nobody buys the plugins. Since most people use the Mac, you should be able to easily find someone with ALL of the available RTAS stuff. If you're gonna buy a new computer, get the new Mac with the dual processors. That will make using the 001 near as powerful as using a mix-plus Protools system.

I definitely prefer a PC over a Mac. It's easier to manipulate and customize a PC once you master windows and even DOS. I find the Mac to be a little clumsy in that regard. I'm thinking about building my HD system around the PC. Those HD plugins can't be cracked (yet), so it doesn't matter which one you use.

FREQ, what would you recommend that I do to maximize my current set up to handle a lot of plug-ins?

From what people tell me, get as much memory as possible, and try to manage your disk allocation. If you can get a computer (PC or Mac) with dual processors, that will open up a whole new level for you. I avoid the Digi 001 like the plague.
