I've got a few questions of my own that pertain to what seems like a topic that is covered here a lot.

Here is my situation, because a friend is offering me his 2000xl for a small price, but I've been doing research on the 1000 with the JJ OS.

First off, the problem here is that I'm having trouble figuring out how many features I am going to be missing out on by buying the 2000xl over the 1000 with the JJ OS. I know that JJ has made so many advances with the 1000 that it's hardly the same machine
- - - - I'm talking about things like bitconvert, enhanced customization, real time pitch shift, 2 assignable q-link sliders, etc... - Oh and the fact that the 2000xl doesn't come with flash memory standard is bugging me too...

I've been using my friends 2000xl for a while on and off, and just love the feel of the bigger piece of hardware, the pads, and the overall build (blah blah I know...).

My main concern is that I'll really be loosing some important features by passing on the 1000 w/ the JJ OS and the fact that the 1000 is a faster processing machine. I hate the damn 1000's looks and shady pads, but I'm of course willing to sacrifice some time replacing pads here and looking past the fact that the 1000 is the 2000xl's ugly little smart brother . . . I'm all about productivity over cosmetics.

PLEASE HELP! Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Its true, the 1k has more features. Depends on whats more important to you. Is looks more important?

2kxl is also a classic machine, it has made a lot of hits.

Ask youself, what are you going to use it for?

Do you really need X machine?

Too bad we can't just rip the 1000 apart and jam it into the body of the xl, but that would be a long long process. To me functionality is really important. I think I'm starting to see just how many options/effects/programs I'd be missing out on by passing up the JJ OS.

1000/ JJ OS for sure man. You will be happy when you are sitting there with your 1000 USBed up to your computer and you are transfering .WAV files straight to the MPC, and slicing and dicing them with JJ OS, and then making a sequence and looking at it in GRID EDIT, etc., etc.,... not to mention that you can have up to 128 megabytes of RAM, and a hard drive in that "little ugly brother".

But hey, If you feel like messin with floppy disks and ZIP disks on that XL, then be my guest... just don't complain to us when your SCSI card in the XL gets fried cuz you forgot to power off before you plugged in your ZIP drive.

Well damn, thanks for the encouragement. Exactly what I was looking for - someone to tell it like it is. Much appreciation! I'm already looking forward to using that bitgrunger (whatever the hell that thing is called), bit converter, and all the effects that come with the 1000 that aren't included on the xl.

Hey,

I had a 2000XL about 7 years ago - loved it, but with the advent of Reason I convinced myself that I no longer needed and MPC and sold it (mistake!). - After a few years of getting used to Reason and working with it as a program I started to hanker after the old MPC - to cut a long story short I bought a 1000 when they came out and was amazed at how much better they were over the 1000 - much more useable - the ability to hook it up to the computer via USB and the compact flash cards is a major major major imrovement over the 2000xl - the floppy disks and scsi leads and drives and all that stuff cluttering up the workspace, I don't miss that! - and then JJ dropped - say no more!

I'd say that there ain't really and comparison now - I'd definately get the 1000 without any thought - just my thoughts anyway.

i had a 2000xl for years and when the 1000 came out i went to guitar center to test it. i passed on it for many reasons.

it wasn't until the 2500 came out that i spent the money to pick that up. there's still some things the 2000xl had that i used which are not available in the 2500 (Akai OS or JJ OS), but i survive without them (although i do complain every so often).

but my advice is to try it before you buy it.

hi im chiming in here because I have a 2000xl and I want an mpc that has the transient chop feature so i can stop using protools then recycle then sample my favorite chops into the mpc. it all seems like to long of a process. Ive never had the 4000, but owned the 2500 and 1000 for short periods, does the 4000 transient chop mode function the same as the 2500 and 1000? I have the fx card in the xl so im really considering upgrading to the 1000 for the ouputs and transient chop feature. although i really like the sound and workflow of the xl........thoughts?

Keep what you got and work with it. That's the best advice I can give. Editing is no fun on the 4k. Protools and recycle is way better than any MPC for the automatic chopping.
