First of all pad A02=Note 36=C1. (Program>1 MIDI>1)
If ur 3k is clean u can see 'Bass'(Kick drum, not acoustic bass) written on the casing above pad 2, and 'Snare' on top of pad 6. This is General MIDI where sidestick is C#1, snare is D1, e.t.c. You can go as low as Note 35, and as high as Note 98.
Can' recommend a good external hard drive since i never used one, but i would recommend an internal/external card reader, which due to compatibility issues will be nearly impossible to find unless u upgrade to...
(drum roll please)
Vailixi 3.50!!! :D
The best thing to happen to 3k users ever :!:

zeusmajor thanks yo for the info on the note settings. after checkin out some info on the card readers i think i might roc with that instead of a external scsi drive . which card reader the best to go that wont give me no drama . cause i love my mpc like cook food and dont want to damage it.

So upgrading to 3.50 enables you to use or find compatible internal/external card readers with no problems? I believe I read on this forum somewhere that the 3k would only read up to 750mb of a harddrive.

3.50 allows improved compatibility with various SCSI drives that would other wise not work. ( spoken about MANY times on this forum and experienced by those who have upgraded and are using some of the non-working models with success )

MPC3000 disk access limits have been spoken about in the past on this and other forums.

MPC3000 ( OS up to and including version 3.16 ) machines show the disk size based on a maximum 30mb partition limit.

MAX-PART-SIZE = 30
MEG = 1024
PART-TOTAL = 26

(MAX-PART-SIZE x MEG) = 30720
(30720 x PARTTOTAL) = 798720
(798720 / MEG) = 780

Disk size maximum = 780 megabytes.

A connected storage device of say 1 GIG will only be usable to 780 megabytes.

OS 3.50 can create 32 megabyte partitions so the above details don't hold true.

If your MPC3000 has a built in ZIP drive then swapping it out for a card ready will not be too hard. ( once you find the right card reader )

I use 1 gig cards.

2 gig cards are needed when in the "Hybrid-Partition" mode if you're using the largest partition size option when formatting a disk with 26 partitions.

www.mansell-labs.com/faq for more information concerning "Hybrid-Partitions".
