If I understand you correctly, you are using the MPC to sequence with and want to be able to access different sounds on the motif on each of the 16 different midi channels?
If so, what you want to do is get your Motif in song mode (hit the button that says "Song" under the "Sequencer section." (Actually "pattern" will work here too.)
Once you do that, pick a song that hasn't been used yet (or use an existing song as a starting point if you want - we aren't really interested in the song/pattern in the motif at this point, just the sounds and FYI a blank song will have all 16 channels set to the 1st piano sound/patch)
Now hit the "mixing" button just below the pattern button - this will bring up an overview of all 16 midi channels on the motif. I believe it defaults to the mixer view with channel faders and pan pots on the screen.)
Now Press "Voice" below the screen (this is the F2 button.)
Now you should see an overview of all 16 channels and the patch number they have assigned to them.
Just use your arrow keys from side to side to switch from Midi Chanel 1-16 and use the scroll wheel to select the patch you want. You can see the name of the patch for the currently selected midi channel up in the upper right-hand corner fo the screen.
Now just choose the sound you want and set your MPC to output on that midi channel and bang out some tracks!
(Note: You may want to set your motif local mode to off to keep down any strange behavior resulting from a mis-match of selected track on the MOTIF and MPC - for example, if you have midi channel #1 highlighed on the Motif screen and it has a bass patch set in it, and you have midi channel #2 selected for the active track on the MPC (assuming you have soft thru turned on - on the MPC) then you would hear both the bass sound and whatever patch is loaded on midi channel #2 of the motif at the same time.)
Also, if your MPC has any pgm # tied to the particular midi channel and track, then that may be over-riding your settings on the Motif. Go into Utility>midi>Switch> and you can turn both bank select and program change off and the motif will not respond to any program changes coming from external devices. Of course, you may actually WANT it to respond to program changes at some point, especially if you save the pgm (patch) number with the track and midi channel info on the MPC.
I don't know about the 2000's, but my 3000 only has 128 patch selections available, so it kinda falls short on it's ability to select the 1024 or so patches available on the MOTIF. What I do to overcome this is turn bank select off, but leave program change turned on - on the MOTIF and manually set each midi channel on the motif to the bank I want and then use the MPC to select any of the 128 different patches in a given bank.
Of course, if anyone can direct me on a better way to deal with this I would LOVE to hear it - it is always a challenge to try and remember what bank I was using for a particular sequence several months ago.
BTW: Since you have a MOTIF, it is definitely worth your while to check out motifator.com. It has several quick tips there and is actually where I learned how to enter song mode to access all 16 midi channels. Before that, I was very happy with the sounds of the MOTIF but very frustrated with the fact that I could only access one of them at a time!
