Hey MPCers,

I currently have an MPC1000 and am thinking about upgrading to the JJ OS.

The main feature which is attracting me to the JJ OS is the Grid Edit.

Do I need to get the latest JJ OS (i.e the one the costs 30 bucks) to get the Grid Edit or does the free version support Grid Edit also?

Finally, are there any risks with installing the JJ OS and can it be backed out if there are problems?

Actually after reading the JJ OS documentation I've decided that $30 is a very fair price for the new features you get. If I do upgrqade I will get the latest version.

So....my final question remains......are there any ricks associated with installing JJ and can I back it out if things go badly wrong.

You can always do a "Hard Restart" of your MPC and reintall the old OS if something goes wrong. I completely understand the hesitation, I had it too because I didn't want to ruin my machine that I spent good money on.

JJOS is a reliable OS. Even moreso than the akai OS. Install with confidence!!

Nice one. I think I'll do just that.

I think your waranty is void if you install third party hard or software. I'm not 100% on that, but I'm pretty sure. But that didn't stop all of us, did it? LOL. You have nothing to worry about though. The JJ will in no way harm your MPC. If anything, it makes it stronger. And this site is a great source of support, so if anything goes wrong with your MPC, do a search or ask for help.

Holla and enjoy your new toy.

for all i know, i'm sure. unless there's some record in the mpc flash rom that's like..."XXXX os loaded" every time you load an os.

however, what reason would a service man have to check that out if you send in an mpc say with broken pads still under warranty and running the current akai os 2.11? to access that, they'd have to open the mpc and stick in their little programming tool or w/e they use

then they'd be like "whoops, looks like at one time you were running a non-akai os. looks like we won't be servicing you."

frankly it's not in their interest to know - vst for example wouldn't give a goddamn.

I was thinking that, but I wasn't sure if they could check. But like you said, as long as the Akai OS is back on it when you send it in, who cares?!

of course there's a record in there somewhere, it saves your password, right?

i dunno exactly how the password thing works. however, as i understand it the password's based on numbers that are there from when you put in the jj os though, not before - the product id i believe is generated from the JJ os code, it's not on the akai machine product id.

i'm not talking about the product id or where it comes from, i'm talking about the fact that the JJ OS can remember that you have already typed in the password which unlocked it even after you've removed the JJ OS and went back to the Akai OS.

this means that there is a location in the flash ROM somewhere which stores that you have already unlocked the JJ OS, and this location does not get wiped out when you load different OS's. if Akai knows where that location is, they'd be able to tell if you had installed and unlocked the JJ OS even if you sent your mpc to them with an Akai OS loaded.
