Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

I dont think he is just doing that. Im not a big fan of that either.Instead of letting the mpc make the program for you in 16 chops in order of the chops, I believe he puts them on the pad the way he wants to play them back.

THANK YOU!!!! I'm glad some people realize that. I don't ever just let the MPC export all the chops into my pads. I take parts from all over the songs and MANUALLY place the sounds in the pads the way I... the way I... want to play it. And the order I place them in the pads are in rows, so it'll be easy for me to play it. But of course... people always tend to think that a few 10 MINUTE snippets of what somebody displays is ALL that person does.

Watch one of Pete Rock's videos... he's doing the SAME DAMN THING I'm doing. BUT that doesn't mean that little 5 MINUTE snippet of one of his techniques is all he can do.

The internet definitely proves just how most people can't THINK past what they what they SEE and hear.

damu is so fluent... and doesnt say stuff like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4jAllTGFUM

He ain't even on Damu's level!

I don't sit around and compare myself to people.. so, to each his own. But....

That's what a lot of ya'll cats fail to understand. This whole "who's on who's level" is POINTLESS when it comes to TRUE PRODUCTION! What I mean by TRUE PRODUCTION.... is composing and arranging songs with artists.. let me emphasize that word one more time.. SONGS. It don't matter how "hot" a producer's beat is... if you get a rapper on his/her beat that has no rhythm/flow, no breath control and a weak vocal presence... the ENTIRE SONG will be ruined.... the beat won't mean ****! There's MORE to producing than beats, whether it's sampled or originally composed. Me, Damu, or ANYONE for that matter, AIN'T **** WITHOUT THE ARTIST no matter who's "level" we're on.

Open up that third eye, fellas!! OH... and to the one who mentioned about the things I said in that one video where I quoted "If I **** up.. kiss my ass, it ain't easy switchin' these damn banks!".... That's just how I talk amongst friends... I cuss like a sailor... so, the **** what?... it's nothing serious. And OBVIOUSLY you didn't watch the whole video to see what I had to say at the end. As Jay-Z said... a lot of ya'll just "skim through it".... (sigh) Peace

dude might make hot shit too... never know i wouldnt say he's the weakest link. he thought damu was the shit. and u know he's right...boon doc is mad nice too..to compare them is just dumb.. we all make different music. and age has nothing to do with music im 21 and i would bet kids half my age can make hot shit.. thats the beauty of music its art. i just think as mpc users we shouldn't be bickering like a bunch of old ladys lets make that music and if we get stuck on some shit thats what these boards are for help each other out... SMH at you trying to act like you know who does what, and who's on who's level...

LMAO. your either under 20, with very little life experience. Or Above 20, with even less life
experience.

Real dudes do THEIR own thing. Learn to appreciate other Musicians, and keep it moving.
We spend time crafting our practice, and less time foot noting other people. That alone isnt
a problem. The problem begins, when one starts to dictate whos on whos level, and what not.

You lost. You arent on ANYONES level, and you were the weakest link before you even posted.

You know... if more people would think like you, life would be a little easier for us all, as producers. Helping each other grow musically and inspiring others is what truly makes a difference. Word life!

Boon Doc wrote:First of all... just to let it be known, THAT IS NOT MY ONLY TECHNIQUE OF SAMPLING. The way I'm doing them in my videos is just my "quickie" style, to keep the videos in the youtube time-limit, and keep people interested. Some of my sampling techniques take me a WHOLE lot of time, and trust me... you'd be BORED AS HELL watching it on video lol.

But anyways... moving on... like I said before, what I'm doing in those videos is not really complicated at all. It's pretty much one of the BASIC sampling techniques that a lot of sample based producers do (Pete Rock, Ski etc.). Simply slicing loops and playing the chops in whatever order you see fit.

*SO LET ME TRY MY BEST TO EXPLAIN*

If you're trying to keep the sample flowing smoothly without empty spaces in between, you have to pay attention to your timing. If a sample you take is 100 bmps, but you play your chops of it slower than 100 bpms... it's going to cause those "empty spaces" in between. If you play it it FASTER than 100 bpms... it'll still remain smooth, but it WILL definitely change the swing of the original sample's rhythm, which SOMETIMES sounds even better and more jumpy. Sometimes doing that will sound a little unnatural. It just depends on the sample.

So let's say you want to be able to play your 100 bpm sample chops at around 90 bpms without it sounding like a choppy hot mess. Simply either... 1) time-stretch the loop to that tempo BEFORE you chop it OR 2) manually tune every pad of your chops down a notch or two (which will also bring the sample down a key/scale and 5 bmps slower every notch). Set your click-track/metronome to the desired tempo, and let it play as you practice your chop-playing over it to make sure everything sounds smooth. Once it sounds right as you play it to the tempo.... boom!... lay down your drums and everything else you see fit for the beat. Easy as that... and it all boils down to your EAR. You gotta naturally know or train your ear to realize when something works and when it doesn't.

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY!!!!! If you're going to chop a loop up and use this sampling technique... YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE THAT IT'S LOOPING PERFECTLY BEFORE YOU CHOP IT! I repeat... BEFORE YOU CHOP IT! The loop starting or ending too soon or too late will pretty much ruin the WHOLE process.

Hope this helped. Peace & God bless!

"Boonie Mayfield" I been a fan for about a year on you tube. I love your stuff dont ever stop producing.

Can you explain how to use timestretch and bpm match for the mpc 2kxl?
Where can I get a cd by the way?

Thanks fam. I don't know all that much about the 2KXL, but my room-mate Fat Trak can tell you 'cause he uses it. Just send him a message at www.myspace.com/fattrak.

I never implied he didnt make "hot ****"... Please read Carefully. most people tend to start wars
over things they just skimmed through.

He thought Damu was the Sh**, and i know he's right. ... kido. Go into my posts. and look to when the Y society Album Dropped. Guess who was one of the MAIN supporters?
I fought because Several threads got deleted when i ADVERTISED the Drop. ... Again dont assume...

"to compare them is just dumb"... Ummm that was the whole point of my post. RE READ. please...

"Age has nothing to do with it". Ummm...Again re-read. I said your either under 20 and with little life experience...or above 20 and with even less life experience. If you cant decypher that, then thats something music cant help you with. its basic logic.

No one was Bickering. HE SAID something about Boon not being on someones level. I replied by saying it wasnt about LEVELS. lol. ... and you come at me with this...?

Reading carefully is an important thing.

its when dudes just skim thru ish, that problems develop.

I feel kinda strange because I fail to realize the "greatness" behind this thread. No way I'm dissing on Boon Doc, I love his stuff, but ppl please, that sampling technique is probably the very first thing someone will learn on an MPC. It breaks down like this:

-Get a sample, don't give a **** about BPM's or if it loops correctly. The only thing that matters is if the sample contains clean notes stabbing. What I mean by that? Find a sample that when you chop it, each chop will contain one single stab or sound on it. A very good example of such a sample is the Tears sample used by The RZA on the infamous Wu song.

-Make good chops. Again you don't need to bother about how many there should be. Normally I would chop it in no more than 16, so that I can get everything on one pad set. I use Recyle for doing that. Mad easy and fast. The only thing you should take care of is to start each chop exactly from where it starts and not having spaces in the very start or end. That way you'll get your chops to be triggered instantly by your pads.

-Spread them out in no particular order and start improvising by using different compinations. Normally you will end up with something nice after about half an hour.

-After that play your sequence. If chops are going one over the other that means that you're playing everything too fast. Slower your tempo. If again you hear gaps between your chops, then you need to raise your tempo. If you break down your sample into single stabs, then you don't even need to care about your tempo.

The only thing that is time consuming for me is the proccess of turning everything to Monophony so that no chops are going over the others, resulting in a **** up sequence, because normally I will use only fractions of my chops from there to there and and then compine them with their full length. Sounds complicated but still mad easy.

Ppl you only need to play with your babies. Don't treat MPC's like you're some kind of a classical music composer. That piece of equipment was designed for pure fun.

PS Later I'm gonna post one of my beats which demonstrates exactly that technique.
