Mo Phatt

Which has the better soundset, the Mo Phatt or the original Planet Phatt? Also, is there any difference between the MP-7 and the MK-6 (besides the fact that the MK has keys, and the MP has pads...)?

I post this on UGHH.com, too, but I'd like some input from the MPC heads.

We'll I've got the Mo Phatt, and its a gem. The bass sounds alone are worth it. I've owned a few E-mu modules and I think its the best one. I thought the Mo phatt was the updated planet phatt, hence the "mo".

ive got the mk6 and the px7. The px7 = mp7 (just differant sounds and color)

Anyways, the keyboard version has no sequencer, just sounds and keys. The racks, just have sounds, and the mp7, px7, and xl7 have sounds and a sequencer.

Since you have the mpc you probably would be best off with the rack, just for space reasons and the interface is exactly the same, size should not be of concern. However, if you plan on getting expansion cards for keyboard sounds, you may need the keys of the mk6 to play.

The mophatt sounds are good, but dont be confused as to what really is there. It basically serves me as a "drum" source, and "bass" source. Great drums and great bass, combined with its filters is awesome! but it doesnt really have other good instruments:(this is what the other expansion cards are for) Yeah it has some synthy sounds, and alot of stabs, but unless you really mangle them, they are too "recognizeable" , this bugs me. But i would say the synth engine really allows you to shape your sounds easily (especially with the filters) so this may or may not be an issue. Just remember: sounds other than the drums and bass, need tweaking. You can get some very good analogish leads, and such, but nothing "realistic" or "complete"-as in bread and butter sounds-i.e. piano, strings, electric piano, good organ, leads.

Dont get me wrong there is alot to work with, and you should be good for a while, but you will need at least 1 more rom for a solid setup, unless of course you coincide with samples on your mpc.

The mp7 (i have px7) are extremely cool. I like mine because i can use it independant of all my other gear. Basically with my mpc, i sample alot of my beats, so i need lots of disks, and also my vinyl and turntable, i also use a triton studio-both setups not really portable. But with the mp7 i can just take with me (i travel to friends studio, and parents house alot) so the portability with the mp7 is great. Its light, and its got all the sounds in it, plus good filters and effects, and decent sequencer plus you save all your sequences to the roms (can tranfer to computer via usb) So no extras needed, just a bag, and headphones.

anyways if you want a little portable production system the mp7 would be the way to go, but youll need at least 1 expansion card: the pop rom, zr76 rom, or vintage keys.(all for key type instruments, not just percusion or bass.

I would say get the mophatt! why? because you will have access to more sound expansion roms if you wish to add more later.

I didnt know that the PK-6 didnt have a sequencer. I guess i'll cop the Mo Phatt, though, seeing as how i'm getting a Motif ES pretty soon and wont need the keys. Again, good lookin out with that detailed response.
