Hard drive formatting question....

Ok so I've had my MPC1000 for years but just decided to install a hard drive when I broke some CF pins. Got everything in the mail, installed booted up (which took a little while and crashed a few times) and when I go to save i have 0 MB on my HD. So i know that its new and I'm supposed to format it so I go to utilities,scroll to hard drive, press DO IT..............Nothing happens. The DO IT button doesn't highlight it just freezes for a couple of minutes without formatting. Im running an old OS that is NOT JJ, i think it says something like Akai 1.7 when it boots (I know its old but without CF or HD I have no way of updating.) I bought a 80GB Hard Drive from Drive Guys and it says its a White Label (Manufacturer: IBM, Toshiba, Fujitsu). I really want to start saving and update my OS but have hit a bump in the road. Any idea's on how to format this HD without putting it into a laptop (I don't really want to swap with my Macbook).

hang on, so you have. gone? Mode, pad2, wheel to HDD, Window button, F2 for format yeh? and thats not doing it?

i ask because with my OS the doit option isnt even there. and i just did this like 2mins ago, worked fine

Its a little different then mine but yes. If i remember correctly it goes: Mode, PAD 2, F3(Utilities), Scroll to HD, F6(Do It) but nothing happens.

oh damn, ok well you should still be able to use a CF card even if u have a bent pin or 2 just cant use teh full compacity of teh card. so usb that to you PC and get JJOS Free version and try. best idea ive got sorry

Did i say bent pins?? Sorry i ment broken pins. If I put in a CF card it just crashes the MPC so that ideas out the window. Thanks for the insight though.
Anyone ever bought a HD from Harddriveguys.com?? I'm thinking this maybe the problem or the OS I'm running on.

that's the problem right there. you can't use the hard drive to it's full capacity without upgrading. you may want to look into sending your mpc to get serviced or look into getting a CF reader to replace the one you have and do it yourself. it's not hard.

whoa whoa whoa, send it in or new CF??? That's more money. Money I do not have. I'd be willing to do this IF i knew for a fact that it would work, but I don't want to spend money on a CF reader when I just bought a HD to work around my problem. Is it possible to format and then load a new OS onto the HD via USB?

might work. can u put the HDD in a laptop and format? give that a shot

I saw in wired magazine that 90% of hard drives bought online are faulty. I would suggest it may be the hard drive thats messed up.
