Removing SMPTE chip from Classic board

Any tips (or tool suggestions) for removing the SMPTE chip from the PCB board with jacks for the 2000 Classic - I want to install it in my XL but I'm worried about breaking it!

Why couldn't you use the MTC?

I got the SMPTE board for free and would like to install it in my XL...

I'm not asking how to sync just how to remove the chip from the board.

If I remember right, the chip itself has a corner missing. You should be able to hook something under that corner and pull it out.

Thanks man I got under that corner and it flipped out.

Also for everyone elses reference. Akai lovingly designed the chip with all the legs folded around it so they push against the contacts in the socket rather than slotting legs into holes. This means you don't have to worry about bending them when you pop the chip out, which was what was making me hesitate in the first place!

I did that move a few years ago. I thought for sure I was going to break it, but it seems pretty tough. Hardest part is finding something to pry it out with.

And SMPTE rules MTC. Its sad Akai doesn't make a machine with it anymore.

Maybe you do, but as I said the bent legs on the chip means you can be a lot more brutal than you can with many other ICs I've encountered.

If I had an extraction tool I'd definitely use it but you absolutely don't have to have one.

As for SMPTE ruling timecode - I used it for the first time the other day and it's more convenient in there's pretty much no setup.

Shift and Sync

set sync in and out to SMPTE

stripe a track

press play and record on your DAW.

Done.

Plus it's more accurate and doesn't tie up your MIDI
