For rock, start with the classics:
Led Zeppelin
Deep Purple
Black Sabbath

Those three artists are all from the late 60's early 70's and have good drums and distorted guitars if that's what you're after. If not be more specific.

Asking for a partiuclar year is pointless really though. A good range to look for is late 60's early 70's.

65-76 for psych rock.
70-77 for classic rock(but there's some great 's for the hole decade too.)
80-84 (for more punchy bass drum, usually the same groups where going through a transition from 70's to 80's the music changed in sound alot sounded more electronic synth poppy.)

dude what's up with the Todd Rundgren? I found "Runt: The Ballad of Todd Rundgren" for $2 in VG+ condition in a thrift store, promo copy. Goldmines puts it at like $80, I listened to it briefly (jumped around), total turd IMHO. what gives, are you guys referring to his Utopia prog *coughgarbagecough* stuff? Please recommend me a good Rundgren album.

oh werd. I was thinking musically overall that people thought they were 'good' albums. It's a good sample record, not a good music record. got it. thanks for the schooling
