why is this? I havent ever used a 4000 but everything Ive heard from it has been entirely too clean sounding. Feature wise I don't think it can be touched tho

There's no such thing as too clean. If you chose to , you dirty up the sound of a sample in a million different ways, but you can never extract machine imposed dirt.. The 4000 is the ultimate MPC if you do more with a sampler than sample vynil. If you actually play you'll appreciate the fact that the 4000 can handle the best sound libraries . Something indeed lost with the 3000 or 2500 inferior D/A converters. There is no such thing as a crisp and truly realistic sounding piano coming out of a 3000. It simply sounds manufactured. Brass is even worse IMO. The ancient 96ppqn from the ASQ-10 doesn't help the sub 4000 family members any.
I play my juno and esq-1. I would only use a mpc for sample playback and drum programming. I forgot all about this thread. Since then I bought a cd3000i. A lot less money similar sound to the 3k and has every feature I want. I realised I would probably still sequence in software and I have a mpd16 so why spend the extra money to learn a new sequencer and for pads when I have pads and a sequencer. Sure its not a mpc but its the sound i was after not the mpc itself. I still may buy a 3000 or a 60 one day. And the 4000 is still too clean sounding to my ears. It sounds very sterile. The newer mpcs sound very sterile and generic to my ears. I don't like that it sounds like software sampling which is ok but I prefer not to do that.

I dig how my 4k sounds in comparison to my 2500. Soincally it's a night and day. Also I think it's better to have a audio sample at it's highest possible quality. Then you can slap effects, resample thru ur S950, S3000 or whatever else you might wanna do to it. It's way harder or maybe even impossible to do it the other way around. It's def more hustle to clean up a sample than dirty it up.

As far as audio fidelity and clarity we are in new area than 20 years ago when first mpcs came out, and A track players was the sh!t. That was quality audio back then. But with todays high end car/ home audio systems everybody wants to expierience music to their systems fullest potential. IMO

(Just speaking from a Hip Hop point of view) Although Hip Hop thrives on what is new, fresh and original, I think that certain things should remain the same. Technology creates new possibilities with music, but sometimes it takes away certain "unexplainable" factors. Certain genres are synonymous with particular instruments... like rock and roll having guitars, drums, bass, maybe an organ or minimoog... and these instruments have not really changed over the years. I don't know about you, but I regard my MPC's (60 & 3000) as musical instruments. In rock and roll, the "golden age" came in the late 60's and early 70's and people constantly hunt down instruments from that era (Fender Guitars, Hammond B3, Rhodes, etc). In Hip Hop, the "golden age" came in the late 80's and lasted though much of the 90's... so we hunt down SP 1200's, MPC 60's, ASR 10's and MPC 3000's. Why? Because those instruments were the "SOUL" of Hip Hop's golden era. That does not mean that new MPC's and Computer set ups have no soul... they are just different and a reflection of the new times. Choosing between is like asking "do you want a 2007 Corvette with power windows and heated seats or do you want a classic 1968 Corvette that has everything you REALLY need... Or even the Muhammed Ali vs. Mike Tyson debate that once was popular. But I will say, why do you think every program out there tries to create MPC 3000 swing templates? Many things are imitated but never duplicated... the MPC 3000 is one of those things. A wise person once told me that there is nothing more authentic than the real thing. The 3000 will not answer your phone for you or do your taxes, but damnit, the sequencing and sound are perfect. Study up on harmonics, inaudible frequencies and the human ear - just like the SSL console, it is no mistake that the 3000 produces more hits than any other. I am not going to proclaim any "Kingship" or tell someone what to buy (to each his own) BUT, I will tell you that those who are "in the know" KNOW... that's all I have to say. (Sorry for the long post)

The reality of it all is if a 3k sounds better than a 4k it's because you are using the 4k like a 3k instead of like a 4k.
The 4k has methods that allow you to get a sound that the 3k nor 60 can come close to, it's just a different workflow to do it.
Not harder or longer just different.
If you learn to build your samples correctly in the 4k you won't ever go backwards to the other units.

There are just too many things that aid you in your sound shaping on the 4k no matter what sound you are after.
Grimey like the SP, Gritty like a 60, Deep like the ASR, Round like the 3k or even DAW clean.

I was one who went backwards.I had a 2kxl and didn't feel it so I got rid of it. Later grabbed a 1k and it felt like a toy to me(although I know its powerful). Got a 4k and liked it a lot until gear lust told me to sell it and get the mv8800. After realizing I didn't need all the extras I sold it and got the 3kle. Now I'm content and won't change again. Unless Roger Lynn came with a new 3000!!!!!

Yeah I bought a 1000 when I first started making beats used it for a month and I was like **** this thing cause it felt like a toy and it didn't feel like I was making beats on a piece of hardware. So I sold it and bought a 2XL used that for awhile and then bought a 3000 and used that and I got tired of the process I had to go to jsut to make a beat on my 3000 so I sold it and went back to a 2KXL and then used that for awhile and then decided to buy a 60 II cause I found one for cheap to use with my 2KXL and then sold that went back to a 3000 and was using my 2KXL to chop with my 3000 and then I decided to sell my 3000 cause I needed money to buy my house and now I am stuck with my 2KXL but now I am thinking about trying a 4000 but I don't know if I like it that much.

damn, check the math
1000 - 1000 + 2000xl + 3000 - 3000 + 60 - 60 + 3000 - 3000 = 2000xl

you gotta find the right mpc and make a commitment

Exactly.
You should put a minimal of a year into an MPC before you consider trying another.
Too many people talk about why they went from one to another and then you tell them the one they had did that too.
Just shows they never learned the box.
Having gone through the various MPC's as they were released I clearly see the advantages each one offers compared to the previous model and where they fall short.

3000 is the best.........really. I tried them all.

Just an opinion.
I have not tried them all I have owned all but the 1000 and 500, and I will still say it's opinion not fact.
They simply require different methods to achieve different sounds.
As far as features the 3k is too boxed in and limited to even be a contender.

Not that you are wrong for liking the 3k but that just means just that..
you like not that it's better.
