But it always says the name of a program there. Wouldn't it make more sense if it registered as a recorded track only when you actually record something (i.e. hit the record button)?

It would make sense to me. But if that happened to me, I'd just hit erase, scroll to that track and erase all events. No biggie, right?

No biggie, just saying. Everyone works differently. I've often found myself slightly frustrated by how easily a track registered as having something on it when it doesn't really. But yes no biggie.
