Personally I own an s950 and really... it all depends on what you want to make. Its no big deal really... with the invention of cool toys like fruity loops, reason, and mpd 24/trigger finger/korg pad control, etc. I guess having an s950 is kinda pointless like having an mpc. you know...

If you like the idea of having wires all over the place and tape and midi and what have you then 1.) would be your plan of attack. if you need to k.i.s.s. then 2.) is the way to go (everyone's doing it...) then its best to just go digital and stay there.

thats the way of the world... its all over the radio...

i mean they make sample cds with "hot sounds" alot of "hits" have been made with just keyboard factory sounds.

just a few questions to ponder...

Nowadays, do you have to buy an 808 drum machine to get 808 sounds?

Do we have to sample from records to get drums?

Is it worth the time and effort to sample? to the avantgarde, its just stealing....

when you make beats is it a hobby or a job?

and how much $$$$ are you willing to spend to get your point across?

if you like that (OFFICIAL) lo-fi 12 bit (and lower) sound an s950 is a good choice.... its a great sampler and can be used with the mpc via midi... its just a sound module... nothing more, nothing less.


good luck finding one thats if you still want one.

the filters on there cant be replaced, i got one midi to my fantom.

asking your self why you chose to get an mpc(I guess you have a mpc)
It has a special affect on the sound. Maybe not always qualitywise but the way you sequence and arrange sounds and songs.

When it comes to s950 is one of the first sampler made for musicians.
Belive it or not. The s950 consists of 80's technology and it really captures the era of sampling technology in the 80's In Which is samplers with A/D converters that colours the sound of the recorded samples.

All 80's samplers (s950,Emu Emax,Sp12,sp1200, Mpc60 etc) colours the sound, every sampler in a unique way because of its analog amplifiers, A/D converters etc. Thats why its special. It sounds Unique.

i like the s950 man its the one thing id never sell along with my cat!

I was refering to the mpc(later models) beacause it dosen't allways have an direct coloring, but it has an affect on the sound the way you seq. or arrange the sound.

As far as the arrangements togheter with the s950 there can be differnces beacuse the trimming of the sounds might not allways be tight. Since the trimming is not visual wavefomrs. But numbers. Sometimes theres is a glitch between the triggering and the actual starting of the sample.
That can make a certain swing or fluxuation.
