Share your knowledge on these two classic MPCs

I'm used to keys becuse I have only used an ASR.

I noticed that different ways you strike the pads cause different results. When I tap and release quickly I sometimes get a double hit. If press, it tends to makes one solid hit which is what I want but he inconsistency between the two makes me a bit nervous. Is this right or is there something I should be concerned about?

If this is right, what part of the manual tells of how to strike pads to achieve a certain affect? I might just need to get used to pads but I just want to be able to tap stuff out fast without worrying whetger I'll get a double hit.

I'll probably have a ton more questions guys, so bare with me! :D

As a ASR user, dont expect the 3000 to replace what a asr 10 can do. dont expect that at all.....

I didn't buy it to replace the ASR, I just need my drums to hit harder and crisper. But do you have an answer about the pad question?

I had a feeling that may be the case. Thanks

The ASR produces harder hitting drums than the 3k so I hope you are referring to improved programming not the actual sound.

For sure man, Only thing the 3000 has over it i the sequencer. The asr10 can produce heavier drums and wicked basslines. my beats are the proof.

I was always told about the sequencing of the MPC being superior to the ASR, but I always got around that with event editing.

But, I was told by several well known producers that since the ASR is not a drum machine, I could never produce that crisp, hard hitting sound of a drum machine, particularly the Linn 3000. I noticed that my drums on the ASR are a little flat.

What do you guys do with the ASR to make your drums hit harder and produce heavier basslines than the 3000? Give me some of your tips because I may not be aware of them.

I have some of my tracks on myspace. If any of you guys want to hear them let me know and I'll post up my link.

The ASR has 2 sample rates, filters, compressors, EQ's and other effects to die for.
That's all you need.
You can tweak and resample your drums until they sound like anything you want.
The 3k can't take you down that path, but even on the 3k you have to use the filter to get your drums right.

Regarding your question about the pads. If you're still having trouble with double hits, put your index and middle finger together and strike the pads like you are hitting a drum. Don't be afraid to hit the pads kind of hard--you're not going to damage your MPC. I've seen a lot of people try to hit the pads like they're playing a keyboard when they first try an MPC and that can lead to double hits. There are some good videos of people using MPCs on youtube if you want a visual of what I've described.
I think you'll have a lot of fun with the 3K regardless of what other samplers you have.

can you switch the pads from poly to mono or note, like the 2000/xl?

cause I always put my drums on mono cause I tend to have double shots like that when I leave it on poly, its just the way i strike the pad sometimes.

..................yea thats somewhat a ignorant (in the sense of lacking knowledge) comment. you clearly didn't dig quite enough. bottom line its about the sounds your feeding and the drums hits your chopping or using man. crappy sounds still sounds crappy no matter its an mpc, asr, eps, mv, mc or whatever.

so who here has experience with using the MPC as master and the ASR as a slave?

I have been doing this lately, and you get the best of both worlds... tight quantization, easy midi and workflow, and buttons from the mpc...

And the keys, effects, and the precision sound editing of the ASR, without having to deal with the less than superior work flow of the ASR, or the limitation of 16 at once sounds on the MPC.

You can also sample your samples from one to another to get sheet really dirty (I have been using sub-outs on my mixer, so you have additional EQ control when you do this).

I have yet to try utilizing all 16 outs (both machines), but once I get serious with a beat, Ill try it..

Anyone else got some good ideas on this syncing topic...?

-sorry if I hijacked the thread.

You summed it up right there. Gotta have keys, pitch bend, and mod wheel, but the pads(especially when set to 16 levels(velocity)), truly bring out the beast in the ASR-10

You can use the ASR-10 w/o the 3K, but it's like always relying on the preset envelopes-ur just not using the ASR-10 to it's full capacity. :)

Also, with the Vailixi 3.50 o.s, there are timing correct settings not even available on the 2500's (akai) o.s., let alone the ASR-10's.
