sampling from cds

I've gotten sick of being confined to my vinyl record collection for drums. I don't have a lot of records with real good drums and some of my records aren't in the best shape. Plus I have a ton of cds so I'm thinking I will just start sampling from them. What are the drawbacks of sampling from cds. Thanks a lot for taking time to answer. Your input is greatly appreciated.

hey tommyj, i've done some limited sampling from cds, i personally don't see anything wrong with it although I do prefer vinyl myself. I say if it benefits your creation, use it, cd, vinyl, 8 track, etc. Once you get it, make it your own

its really a sound preference vinyl gives you more of the analog warmth, but who gives a shit... if its a hot beat nobodys gunna go man if you sampled off vinyl it would be hotter ya know. remember with the mpc if you dont take the "by any means nessesary" approach you are limiting your self samples and then in turn creation

Actually, yes they would, vinyl sounds less sterile.......

i know theres a difference in sound but all im saying if its hot beat ...its hot.

personally i think its wak to sample cds and mp3s. i was brought up knowing that digging is apart of beat making and you gotta pay your dues. it pisses me off when i spend my whole life looking for a certain break or sample and some kid just downloads it or has a copy of ultimate breaks and beats 103 and has no clue of what hes using. i dont know, i guess it a pride thing. in the end its all about the final product and no one would know the difference, so do what you gotta do...

yeah i here ya man i love digging i get like excited whenever i see records newhere , but yeah if live in a shitty spot and have no record spots newhere you gotta do what u gotta do, cant wait to make a beat if you got inspiration going

i use what ever records sample cd's pots pans etc when that feel'n hits its on so dont be afraid of what you use.just make that heat

ive sampled you tube, microphone noises, vinyl, Cds,,,, in the end its the product you create

Sorry if this is off topic, but how do you guys sample your CD's, MP3's? I noticed when I sample mp3's off my computer its sounds really digitalized/weird on the MPC2000xl sometimes. Is there a special sample rate that your supposed to playback the mp3 at or record with when you do that?

I have access to a huge vinyl library at my school, and I wanted to take my laptop there, record some samples as mp3's, and then play it and sample it on my mpc at home. Is it better if I use a portable DAT recorder to do record those samples, or would a laptop be good?

the laptop idea is cool, but if you want non-digital sounding ish record the samples with a tape recorder and you have a warmer analog sound, ive even seen dudes use the talkboy remember that handheld recorder in home alone 2!!! lol remember just use your ears as ur guide if you record a shitty signal expect the mpc to get shitty samples and vice-versa. word
