I Need Help with my MPC60II

I don't know if I have a problem with the drive, or the MPC. But every time I put in a disc it says "There is no disc in the drive. Please insert a disc." At first I thought is was because they were, but I did the little tape trick to em, and this is a brand new drive. I have no idea what is up with this. So please help me!

nah, the disk should work. if it is new the jumpers are probably wrong.

Where are the Jumpers?

You may try 720k disks or cleaning the drive with a cleaning disk from radio shack or computer store.

The jumpers need to be set a certain way, check with an akai serice center or the places that sell them new like Route 66 Studios.

Thanks for the info. The drive is actually from route66. Brand new still sealed when I got it, so I don't think it's dirty.

At first the load light was on constantly, but I realized that the cord was on unside down. But, the problem is still the same. "No disc in drive." So hopefully it's the jumpers. Cause I have no idea what else it could be.

Maybe the drive is just faulty.

By the way, do you know where to find an expansion board for this machine?

Do you still have the old drive? Did it work at all? I wouldn't go with a Route 66 drive since it doesn't work with the upgraded OS. Plugging in the ribbon connector upsidedown may have damaged the drive, But I am not sure about that. I'd say return it and get a floppy from forat or VST in pasadena.

The expansion (memory?) is available, check the old messages in this forum for the address.

The person that I bought the MPC from had included the drive for it. Cause I guess the old one is was busted. I didn't know it wouldn't work when you upgraded it. That sucks! Why would you even want a drive that does that? Whatever. Thanks man I'll check with companies you said. I just wanted to make shure it wasn't the MPC itself, which at this point I don't think is the case. I just got a wack drive.

I am having the same exact problem... I just got my new floppy from Route 66 and It would help if the damn thing came with a diagram on a way to put the jumpers so that it would work with the 60 II... when I got it I noticed that the jumpers were set on a,b and e... but at that setting the light stays on and it says that there is no disk in the drive...

I also had the ribbon upside down and noticed that the first error message that I got said that the disk may be damaged... yadda, yadda... then I fixed it the right way and it said that there was no disk in the drive... but ever since I switched the ribbon to the right way, I never got that bad disk error so I'm hoping that I didn't blow anything...

but yeah... if somebody know the way that the jumpers should be rearranged, please share... I tried about 50 different combinations...

I emailed route 66, and they said that they are preset to the MPC 60. So I don't know. But I think it's definetly a drive problem (I Hope). I was using the HDs though, as you probably can see, so I asked them if that was the problem. I am waiting for there response, but after hearing that it happened to you I think that there is something wrong with the drive.

Nah Foot, its the ribbon... if your looking down on it with the ribbon to the left and the power supply to the right... the last "string" on your ribbon should be blue... another problem is that the floppy drive can only accept DSDD 720k floppys... aint that a b@tch!... the DSDD floppy have a lower disk space capacity... so leave the jumpers where they are, turn the ribbon right and get some DSDD floppy and you should be good... I am personnally unhappy with this floppy drive.

I know you guys might have been discussing this topic to death, but personally I just *can't* see what problems, logically, the use of HD disks instead of DD in the MPC60 might create.

I often used HD disks formatted to DD capacity on my amiga DD-drives back in the days and neither did I lose any data or destroy any diskdrive during years and years of use. And the disk itself can not hurt the drive in any way. The diskdrive writes to the disk, not the other way around.. and from a mechanical point of view, them disks are identical.

As it is now I use DD disks on the 60 anyway though, just until I get my SCSI expansion, as I have a large batch of them left.

I hate the drive too. All I have is problems with it. I have the DD disc and I still get the same error. Why am I using it any way. I don't know. I got to upgrad to a Zip and version 3.0. If any one else has any ideas please help me. Caue I'm stuck on this.

try to find a new old stock 720k disk drive. try an akai service center and get some specks and troll for old mac an pc floppy drives.
