I would've gladly stayed with the older version w/ p mode except for one small problem:

I updated to the latest just to see if JJ may have re implemented it, no dice.
Now: I RELOAD my previous OS and guess what? PAD MODE IS GONE FROM THE OLD VERSION!!

It's like it was never there!!! Really strange...

Anyways, I was going to make a video demonstrating some of the really cool stuff you can do with it for those that didn't think it was that big of a deal (realtime juggling, breakdowns, accurate realtime beat divisions, etc.) but now it's gone forever!!

So please, for anybody that used p mode, or anyone that missed out on it and would like to try it, consider shooting JJ an email asking for it back, or at least allowing users to continue using it in previous versions.

Thanks,

-KV

Pad mode was a separate screen that let you assign a set of controls to any pads you wished.
The controls were things like skip to, and back a bar or a beat, swing and tempo.

The forward/ back a beat was particularly cool and let you perform realtime beat juggles/ breakdowns.

By assigning these functions to pads allowed you to perform variations that weren't really possible otherwise. Very similar to Ableton live actually...

i already sent JJ an email about pad mode asking him to put it back in when he first removed it. i never got a response. i think those of us who use pad mode must be in the minority. :(

if i'm not mistaken, os 4.84 is the last one with pad mode in it. if you load that or any of the previous ones up, pad mode has got to be there. Vitamin, i would try again if i were you. it HAS to be in there. you might have just had a glitch or something.

how did you navigate to pad mode in the previous os versions?

Sooty:

Just tried re-loading the old os again (5.37 for 2500, latest is 5.41) but no dice. P mode vanishes after you try a newer os. Crazy.

Azres:

Mode+other. Was right nest to pad on the "F" keys.

Damn, guess it's just a 2500 thing. I really wish JJ wouldn't introduce things that people come to rely on and then take them away. Why did it get axed anyways?

loadsa kids wanted it removed for more space to cram features in, for my money i say the os had peaked at about 484 the last one to have pad mode......'cos 485 and up are missing some shit, like pad mode, and are buggy where polyphony is handled.

i don't recall anyone asking for it to be removed. i think JJ just made the executive decision to pull it out in order to make more room for bug fixes.

this limited codespace thing is getting to be a real pain in the a$$. the ultimate mod for the mpc1000 would be somehow getting a new chip in there to open up a ton of room for the OS and then watch JJ go nuts adding tons of new features.

its a shame that the os is tied to a specific place in the machine,

like i was wishing that JJ could somehow relocate the sequence memory so that it could be placed in the same ram as the samples, cos then we could use 128mb of either samples or sequences....i'm getting to the limit of 4.6mb allocated to sequences quite often now, especially there is all this qlink editing data possibility in the patterns now, and note repeat action everywhere....its getting to be a squeeze. heh : 0

for me, removing pad mode and adding new features was the best jj could do. i'm happy with the way he works...
but i don't see why he didn't kick spash screen instead of pad mode. i don't use both of these features, but splash screen hasn't any use at all, while pasd mode might be important for, like, a few people.
