I know there used to be an article about this a while ago before I had a MPC, now I was wondering if this is possible with the 1k

By ONE Mon May 03, 2004 4:20 am
I don't think so! You would basically be using pitch. The 1k doesn't have a real time pitchsweep even on the q link. The only thing I can think of os maybe re-sampling your sample or sequence, chopping it up into a bunch of little pieces and arrange all the chops in the correct order but on each one lower the pitch (tune) a little. It would be a real pain doing it this way, and I doubt it would sound realistic.

Another way is to re-sample the sample or sequence - USB it to your PC - add the turntable stopping effect on the wav file - dump it back in the MPC and put it in a sequence.

I think it can be done by setting the variation slider on the sample you want to pitch to T (tune) and then pitching the sample down in real time with the slider. Add a vinyl crackle layer on the same pad and it would work. Especially if you're fast with the slider.

Hey One, where did you get the notion that you can't PITCH a sample with the slider in real time?
And are you selling the MPC? bored of it already?

Try the Q-link on a long sample, and move it in the middle of the sample. You'll know what I'm talking about, but then again, even though I updated the piece to 1.04 I haven't messed with it, so maybe akai fixed that!

I got a 4k that's why I'm selling the 1000.

I'll try ONE and hope it works.
But I now start thinking that you must be right and that you can't pitch down a sample, but only set the pitch at which it should play with the slider.
That would really piss me off to say the least.

OT: going for the 4k? that's quite an investment.

Went for the 4k! Had it for about a week and some change I think. Found it used good price. I love the 4k, don't need to go to a PC for NUFFIN when making beats. Does a lot of things better than the PC does too! Plus real time control with the Q-links!

I 2nd the motion about non-realtime pitch shift, even with the q-link. The MPC just does not do this. No MPC (aside from the 4K) ever has. Which I don't like, since my old S20 (not s2000) could do this!

bhunt: You're best bet is to try to simulate on a PC, or find an old effect that has either a pitch shift built in (look for an old ART MultiVerb SE or similar multieffect unit...they go for super cheap now) or a delay with realtime control (I have a MoFX). Turn the delay on and the rate down at the same time is the same as a pitch shift.

just take a record and set it to play air and stop it and sample the stop... put it over your loop, see how it comes out. might not be good but it might work?

That's a good one! Actually you could take just about any record, but I would take either the same record that I sampled or something that sounds like the sample. Record the record stopping, put that in the MP, and make sure the sample you want to mimic the record stopping on and the actual record stopping sample are in the same mute group so that the original sample will stop as soon as the sample with the record stop hits.

Good thinking...sometimes the simplest and most effective shit is right under your nose....

You can also get some one with a CD Turntable, format the wav to Mp3 then burn it on a cd then sample the braking of the sample from the cd turntable.

There is a good possiblity that Akai has a pitch envelope planned for the MPC1000. This should allow to to pitch a sample while it is playing.

However, this is easily accomplished with a regular sampler that can be found for under $200.

A pitch envelope would be nice, but is it possible in the mpc1000? When I tune a sample down I have to retrigger the sample to hear the result. The pitch doesn't change while the sample is playing. Same story with the q-sliders.
