Record Sample -> Computer -> MPC workflow question.

Hi Everyone.

Been lurking for quite awhile and just picked up an MPC-1000 last week. Love the unit (wish I had more time to use it!)

I wanted to reach out to the experts here to see how y'all might tackle this problem. Some context though: Here is how I intend to use the MPC-1000.

Currently I DJ breakbeat (nuskool, funky breaks). I have a Xone:92 DJ mixer which outputs a MIDI clock that I can ajust to seamlessly mix external midi clockable gear (like the MPC) to my vinyl. Its smoking! I love that capability because it actually works well.

In this set up - I want to use the MPC to remix and provide beats, pads, and assorted samples with my DJ sets.

SO - I want to sample 1 - 4 bar loops from my vinyl and use them to do remixes on the fly. So....I started experimenting last night and got a little stuck conceptually...

Here is where I am at:

so how would you guys manage this workflow?

Currently I'm thinking:

1 - record sample off of vinyl (4 bar beat, for example).
2 - get it on computer. (Mac)
3 - open it up in Recycle. Slice it.
4 - Save it as a recycle file.
5 - open it up in Reason.
6 - Move the midi on/off notes to their own sequencer tracks as they relate to a particular sound in the sample (to isolate, let's say, the snare sound that repeats).
7 - to conitnue with that example, export the snare sound by itself.
8 - export the midi file of that snare sound.
9 - import the SMF into the MPC on a track.
10 - import the snare sample into the MPC and have the MIDI file be applied to that sample.

11 - rinse and repeat for the remainder of the sounds in that loop (where each sound has its own track). When playback is done on the MPC it should playback the loop exactly as recorded, but is now flexible for tempo and pitch (as well as muting/unmuting specific sounds in the loop).

ITs a lot of work.

But this workflow seems right.

Any experienced guru's have a thought here?

I forgot what you were trying to acomplish around step 9. sorry

basically I am just trying to suss out the best way to import sampled loops taken from vinyl that seperates each sound out into its own track.

How's that?

I'd like to use Recycle (i guess) and it made sense to import into reason to seperate out the individual hits and then do an export (possibly).

The steps weren't that complicated, I was just being thorough because it was about workflow.

I think you need abletons live.

but that doesn't output slices.

I have Reason, recycle and Live - and Recycle and Reason seem to be the way to go. Live isn't.

This is the first time I've tried to use external HW to playback samples (instead of using a laptop - not good for live performance).

Wow, that is a lot of work.

As Reason exports multitrack midi files, you only neeed to extract the slices to it's own tracks in Reason, export the file then import it into the MPC (you get an MPC track for each track in Reason). Import the slices in one go and create a program for them, assign the program to all tracks.

You are doing too much work! Recycle 2.1 can export each slice as one sample. It can also export midi files and akai program files. Get a mpc1000 program editor and transfer those files to your mpc1000.

Cgip you're missing his point about one slice on each track. It's doable on the MPC of course, but if he has Reason it's much quicker that way.

I'm glad y'all picked up on the one sample per slice bit. That is the piece that I am having issues with. I need that flexibility since the BPM fluctuates depending on the set I am playing...
