Thanks Blue. Perhaps we would roll even better if more people chipped in (with both tips and samples / programs)....

I hope people like my mini Toy Piano...I think using only 17 kb (including the program itself which was about 6 or 7 kb if I remember correctly) for a sound is pretty 'minimal'. But then again: not too long ago synthesizers only had like 2 Mbyte or 4Mbyte of Rom and they could make lots of wonderful sounds with just those tiny little sample-loops.

If people are interested I'll do a quick write up of how to fine tune single cycles samples into proper instruments...there's basically three ways to do this: synthesize (or draw) a single cycle sound, sample it from a synth or grab it from some existing audio file...but once you have it cropped to a 2048 sample you're basically good to go.

i'm very interested.....I have some thing brewing that I would like to do, and this is helping me tremendously, i'll post up a few of my bass sounds I created, not small like yours, I just used a synth to create them, then used extreme sample converter to create akp files, they aren't the best, but they're a little different than the normal sub bass.....

here's the bass, they aren't looped as these were my first programs created with the software, and I didn't really get to deep, I just wanted some different basses in my 4k, let me know what you think, and if you have any tips on looping them to make them smaller and more functional.....

That would be great. Could you also gives some tips on tuning the samples. The Architecture Waves are tuned to f(-1) with a fine tuning of +23 for their single cycle 2048 samples.

This is something Im definitely interested in, this is something Im doing right now, I'll post some of my results. Heres on of the places I'm getting my cycles from:

Here's another single cycle sound....

http://files.filefront.com/Raw+Sawwav/; ... einfo.html

Playing is a little sloppy.....;)

I snipped a saw from a sound file. Pitched it down and down and down until it was about an F-1....used the pencil tool I added a little detail and 'buzz' too it....resampled and resized it so it became exactly 2048 samples in length. This sample I resampled it to 24Khz and change the setting of the sample to 48Khz saved it and repeated the resampling and saving until I had 7 oscillators one octave apart.

Those I used to make the program (layers four of them on top of each other, slightly detuned)...this is a 'classic' Trance / Dance patch....Use the mod wheel on your keyboard to 'open up the sound' (it will open up the low pass filter)

The reverb and the delay in the mp3 come from my mixing desk (a Yamaha 01V96...

I hope you guys like it...

Thanks for sharing! Nice and noisy! One tip I would give you is try to use the filters of the MPC - and assing those to the mod wheel...also you can have the filter react to the velocity of the keyboard. Nice slides between notes - legato style - would also be nice on some of the samples.

Of course looping the samples would be a big plus: they wouldn't end as abruptly as they do now as you could have the envelope do the job of 'tidying' up the tail of the sound.

Again, thanks for sharing!

thanks for the tips, like I said, these were the first sounds I did a while back, not really using the 4k's features, just wanted to get some custom bass sounds into it, I would definitely like to mess about with them to see what I could do.

saintjoe:

For shaping samples on the 4000, I use aksys. Check out the dozen or so envelope shapes and then assign the 3 envelope types in the mod matrix to a parameter.

LFO's to filter resonance or cutoff or what ever.

charlie: Cool! thanks for the osc info. I've been wanting to do this for a long time.

You're more than welcome...did you check out my Raw Saw (a few posts back) tell me what you think about it.

Cheers,

I made a mistake...I put up the wrong file it seems...so here it is again: the raw saw pad and his little space pad brother.

First here's a short demo sequence (the mod wheel opens up the filter and makes the envelop stretch out a bit)

http://files.filefront.com/Raw+Sawmp3/; ... einfo.html

Here's the patch:

http://files.filefront.com/Raw+Saw+Deal ... einfo.html

Patch on is the Trance Monster Pad (it's not really a pad though you could easily make it a pad by giving it a slow attack)...basically it's 4 detuned saw waves (which are also spread out in the stereo spectrum)...I've used the LP4+ filter which is the most decent filter in the Akai for this kind of job (it's not as harsh as the other ones...at least to my ears)...

As a bonus I've put in a spacey pad aptly named 'space pad'...

Please tell me what you think and give me your feed back.

good info on the blog in part one.

looking forward to the info on multisampling. ;)

thanks.

the mp3 demo of the raw saw sounds great. this is exactly what I've wanted to do.... minus the trance ;)

Writing it as we speak!

This part will deal with single cycle multisamples. The next part will deal with obtaining (sampling, creating, 'snipping') good single cycle samples and the next will deal with some patch creation tricks. Perhaps I will also write a little more about the maths involved.

Any feedback (on both the contents and my English writing skills) would be much appreciated.

Haha.
