But dont you agree that just playing the stuff in full level and after that editting the velocity in grid or step edit is actually the same and works a bit faster? :S...

or is it just different, according to the ''feel'' of playing ?

my feeling is that the lack of velocity switching and missing filter have something to do with the new nd chopping, i think he's probably found it more difficult to implement than he originally wished. perhaps the extra strain created by the fact that two notes playing at once have to access the same memory space with non destructive chopping means that something had to give way. like i said before though, i trust jj to work something out, and i think os2 is what i wanted the mpc to be when i first bought one.

bees: we're getting off topic, but absolutely not.

playing stuff in full level with 1 sound on a pad and then editing velocity still uses that 1 sound just at different levels.

with velocitative layers, you're playing DIFFERENT sounds depending on how hard you hit the pad/assign the velocity.

this is not the same at all. the latter creates a much more organic and realistic sound. when you hit a real snare drum hard, it makes a different sound than when you hit it soft. if you record a real snare drum being hit hard and turn down the volume, it will not sound the same as a real snare drum being hit soft.

with velocitative layers you can emulate that soft hit using multiple "takes" of the same sample...

yeah that figures, thanks for the explaination, i'll try and mess with and download your example project.. i'm very happy and excited because i got the new pads now(but a bit unsure if i installed them right, but i made an topic @ mpc1000 forum already)

but the problem is i'm such a fast worker.. i guess i need to smoke some more philly's to slow it down :)

Hm can´t you do this already in os1?

I just want to take the time to say thanks to JJ and everyone on this forum that has contributed their time and energy into debugging the OS and requesting new features. And thanks so much to the hosts of this great forum!

This is the only example I'm aware of in the history of sampler development - if not pro audio hardware - where an independent programmer has hacked the OS, and with the assistance of a dedicated community of users, has added a totally new set of dimensions to it. This isn't open-source, but it's close enough that I'd warrant saying that this another shot at old-man capitalist. This community is a perfect example of how the web is changing the way "consumers" interact with their "products".

Power to the hackers!

JJ ain't a hacker. He's a former (or maybe even current) employee who's helpin out his old boss because he has a lot of passion and pride behind the product that he helped give birth to in the first place. From what I understand, he's the guy who coded the MPC4000 OS. I think what he has done is very beneficial to us the users though, but this definitely ain't no underground king type sh1t.
