Record in's

What do you all have hooked to it, and how do you all sample? I used to run a wire to my computers soundcard to retrieve samples, I don't even remember what type of wire it was. I used to make alot of sampled tracks, but then I learned midi and everything now has been keyboard sounding. I'm in the process of learning how to sample again if you all got any production methods, kindly elaborate
