R there any labels that u typically stay away from? Or gravitate towards?

Cause im finding that I’m staying away from certain labels for mad reasons, like I don’t typically get records from Kudu, Bluenote or CTI (there r exceptions) because I don’t like how there recordings sound.

Like CTI stuff sounds OTT (over- produced) and just does not seem to sit right with the types of beats I wanna make. In fact the only CTI record that sounded good to me was Idris Mohammed – ‘Power of Soul’

By contrast Tamala Motown (battered I know) tends to have a warmer recording quality that fits well in a hip hop context.

I tend to mess wit motown or philly sound mostly...anything with gamble and huff in it is ill no doubt about it...people like the blue notes main ingredient ya know

I hear you shabeatz, everything has its own style. Im not really that into collecting or sampling bluenote records or anything but some of those pieces are pure gems.

hahaha.. I have to agree, I grab anything with a bluenote logo (if it's old), but as far as a label I stay away from.. hmm, I'd have to say verve and pickwick.. the verve stuff have great covers, but I don't think I have ever used a good sample from it, and pickwick is like an old bootleg record label.. I may be wrong, but they have crap like "as seen on TV greatest hits of the 60's" type ish.. pure horribleness.

CTI got some fire too. im not really picky with what i buy specially now that i got my portable so i can listen before i buy.

if its cti or blue note, im coppin it.
verve has some dope shit on it too.

philly sound is ILL. motown is dope but everyone rocks it.

lol yeah im hating on bluenote, cti, kudu and cbs from a sampling perspective they sound boring to me in the context of use in a hip hop track.

obviously there r exceptions but im talking about the majority of stuff i've copped from those labels has been trash.

I don't think you guys realize how many of our favorite hip-hop tune came from blue note, or cti records.
Sure, on the surface it may seem theese records are mostly dull and commercial. But if you listen critically there are useable sounds on all of these records.

Im pretty sure most people in here realize that bluenote is pretty much the most sampled label ever in hiphop history Toranaga....


I really dont understand your point jpeg how it doesnt sound good from a sampling perspective....When you sample a record it is up to you to make it sound how you want it to sound...the recording quality may be different than other labels possibly. But at the same time you should be able to make that sh!t sound hot cause most of those bluenote musicians were the illest.

i try to sample anything off vinyl, even folk songs from some shephard wannabe from the 70's. it doesn't matter. try to stay away from stereotype cliche hip hop samples.

I just sample what sounds good, and and shit that has been used time and time again.

I know alot of nice stuff comes of bluenot but at the same time, id rather something that sounds more high energy like film soundtracks.

Cos if i sample some bluenote im more likely to make some boring shit then if i sample a soundtrack.

How many blue note records have you actually gone through? Sounds like you picked up a couple of compilations and that's it.... I could be wrong tho'

Besides, it's your job to flip the sample and turn it into something better.
