Hey everyone,

New here. Since I am a broke high school student I'm going to have to settle for the 500.

I look forward to having it (christmas) but i got a few questions.

Firstly, would you recommend i chop up my samples on the computer, or in the MPC? I would much rather do it in the MPC than the computer.
I could just get a program like recycle, but for simplicity, i'd rather just sample right into the MPC and cut it up in there.

What do you fellers think?

It's a pain to chop on the 500 (old school chop by ear and numbers), much faster with the Computer.

Well, I currently own an Electribe ESX and I am comfortable with chopping my samples via adjusting start and stop times to separate things out. If that's what the MPC does and thats what's considered a pain in the ass then I'm all good. I am I correct with that?

Yep, You have to trim samples by the numbers.
Start and End time values, no waveform.

Chopping with MPC works fine, Trim your start and end then export to pad, so on! give you perfect chops. It takes alot more time then chopping with computer, but I use the 500 as much as computers to chop.

If i got the time, I chop with 500.

I usually chop with the pc. I dont have any problem chopping with the 500 though. Its all good. Sometimes I think its better to chop by ear than waveform. goodluck

I can't imagine what does it mean to shop by ear and numbers. I can imagine what's chopping by ear, but numbers? I would be so so thankful if someone could record even the shortest film with worst wuality but showing how it look's like - scrolling and moving through 500's menu and maby some chopping...?

I think it means that, instead of chopping by an actual visable Waveform, you have to pick start and end points based on numbers. It does the same thing, but takes more time because you have a lot more tweaking to do since you can't really "see" where you are in the sample. It was annoying at first, but this is my first MPC. I went from software that had a Wave edit to this, and it's not a problem at all.

if im sampling with my 500, im chopping it in my 500 also. i got a pc with cubase, of course chopping a sample in my cubase is easier since u can see the waveforms, but u still gotta listen, either with the 500 or pc because there are some reverb trails that u wont see but can still hear... u dont wanna cut that off. so ur still listening regardless of waveforms or numbers. but of course its still easier on pc.
but im sayin though, if im gonna use only my 500 to make a beat, why would i use my pc to chop up the samples to put back in the 500 because i might as well use the pc to make the rest of the beat also. its not hard at all to chop with the 500 to waste my time to use my pc just for that.

exactly.
lots of people chop on an external program and then do everything else on the MPC. that negates the whole point of having a piece of hardware IMO. it looks like people just like to brag about gear.

Been chopping w/ recycle. Still don't have the MP yet so i might start slicing on the machine when i get it. I've just been preparing a bunch of samples so i got some shit to work w/ when i get the 500.

Question:

When your playing a sliced sample, does the audio overlap? Does the sustain from one pad keep ringing while another is hit, or does the sound from a pad cut when another it played?
