Laptop HD inside my 2000xl?

Just upgraded the HD on my laptop from 20gb to 120gb...so now I have a free 20gb IDE laptop HD that I want to put into my 2000xl(Im tech savvy and have operated on my MPC before).

My question is, what do I need in order to install this effectively? Any leads or links would be greatly appreciated. After this comes the MCD install..haha. Thanks in advance.

but you ll need some other gear thats a litle harder to find. good luck. remember you can install a scsi drive for about $5. i think just the 2.5 to scsi adapter is around $50-$100.

I just put a 20 gig laptop drive in my xl.i had a 18gb scsi but i found the scsi 2 ide converter on ebay.its an acard model with 50 pin interface to 40 pin ide.then i got a 3.5 to 2.5 adapter from microcenter.works great.you can even go smaller & put a 1.8 ipod drive in the xl, because its hard to find space for it & still have all the options.oh & the scsi to ide converter is $30 + shipping the 3.5 to 2.5 converter is $10.00.

before you go sticking that in your mpc make sure the mpc supports a drive that large. for some reason im thinking the mpc will only read up to a 9 gig drive.

no it will read 20 gigs i have one in mine.in os 1.14 the xl will partition a drive a-z thats 26 letters,but it wont read over 1 gig continuous.so it partitions each section of a 20 gig drive 952m.A-U, thats 20 gigs.

How do you power the 2.5 HD and the scsi-2-ide adapter? Without losing use of the internal floppy or Zip?

get some heat shrink tube size 3/32"from home depot.i got a power cable from a old pc it had 3 hard drive connectors & 1 floppy connector.splice into the mcd or floppy power connector(i have a mcd)wire for wire,matching each color.when you go to micro center or what ever,get the 3.5 to 2.5 converter that comes with cradle to make the drive fit in a computer.(you will need that for the drive support)the scsi to ide converter takes a floppy connector,the hd converter takes a hd power connector.if you do it right you can mount it right over the fx card.if you put it there you can still have all the upgrade options.i even added a push button switch to cut the drive on & off so it wont run all the time.

Wow, that's awesome... I was just planning to rely entirely on compactflash storage but this looks easy enough to do. Time to scour ebay for cheap 2nd hand bits.

I always thought there was a way to be able to use my CompactFlash drive and a hard drive within an MPC... So for a 3.5 Hard Drive, did you also just get something to split the Molex connectors, or was that on the SCSI to IDE controller card? If so, I can make a split Molex connector using old power supplies from computers. I couldn't see the pictures too clearly to see what's going on, do you have a larger resolution?

you have to make your own connectors,the scsi to ide card does not supply power.it uses the same size connector as a floppy.feed it & the drive with power from the mpc.with a 3.5 drive i dont think you will have room left for the 8 outs.a 2.5 or 1.8 drive is a lot easier to use.
