i dont know if i am one of a lonely few, but i was really dissapointed to find out that you can't easily move individual events in step edit.

whoever posted the tip about cutting and pasting notes (i think it was effekt....) definitely kinda helped me to deal with the situation.

but overall i think its pretty lame that you have to...

select the event,
copy the event,
delete the event,
set whatever estitmated time you think will be correct,
and then paste the event.
if you are off by a little bit you then have to do the whole process ALL over again.

i know alot of people dont seem to be affected by this feature missing from step edit. most say they just replay their drum patterns in if they are not tight, but its a pain in the ass for a lot of the stuff i try and sequence drum wise. for example alot of times i will setup a sequence with the main loop repeated like 50 times. then i just play different drum patterns over that one long repeated sequence doing fills, change ups, and whatever variations on the beat in one long pass (saves me alot of time rather than doing each sequence individually). then i just chop up all the different beats into individual sequences.

working this way has saved me alot of time, but once i have to go in there and try and clean up some of the kick or snare hits on each sequence, i'm slowed down by having to deal with the cut and paste crap.

many things i've seen people request to be in an o.s. update sometimes seem like they might be a far stretch for akai to implement (or WANT to implement). but i really dont think it would be hard for them to automate this mind numbing cut and paste so that you can select an individual event and just use the jog wheel to select the time. for a sequencer in this price range (or really any price range) i would think it would be a basic included feature....dissapointing.............

didnt mean to ramble. i'm just really happy with my mpc except for a few issues like this where it seems like akai almost went out of there way to make common sense features absent.

any people out there that agree or disagree please feel free to comment. i want to know other peoples thought on this.

peace.

yeah i agree with u still, i hate the fact that u cant select a note in step edit and move that shit, i have to go into sequence edit to do shit like that when it would be so convenient for it to be in step edit.

sounds cool, but you'd still have to st the quantize level for the resolution of the jog wheel and then play the section to make sure it is in the right place, if not, then go back and use the jog wheel. Plus, since the jog wheel is used to select events, you would have to make it the directional arrows, adding yet another step. Use it for a while and see that you will get quite proficient at it.

It would be a decent added option, but the benefits are tenuous at best.

It is in step edit, use copy/paste.

PS, I dropped that tip.

oops, my bad.
props to elmacaco for the copy/paste tip.

now as far as what you were saying elmacaco, this was kinda more how i imagined this option to work...

(and bear in mind i am about to describe this in close detail cause i think about this every friggin time i have to copy and paste....)

---------------------------------
-when in step edit you could select the time of an event and hit window (when you hit window on the time as well as any of the other data fields of an event in step edit it brings up the same exact window, so it wouldnt really be a bad thing to replace this redundant window).

-when you hit window on the time of an event it would bring up a screen that shows the current time of an event. using the jog wheel would change the time of the event.

-after you change the time of the event there should be a test button (like F2 or whatever) that would play the sequence with the event time changed.

-since you are still in that same window, if the event sounds a bit off you could hit undo or maybe even just change the time of the event and it would undo your last attempt at moving that event

-adjust the time, hit the test button and once you have it set in the right spot you could hit something like f5 or whatever and it would complete the event move and close the window.
----------------------------------------------------------

...DAMN.

i wish i was describing HOW to do this instead of describing how i IMAGINE this would be done.

like i said before, i dont think this is an outlandish thing to expect from the 1000. well maybe (hopefully) one day we would be lucky enough to have akai include this in an o.s. update. i cant imagine it would be some massive amount of code (not nearly as massive as like adding timestretch or delay to the o.s.).

man, i swear if the akai o.s. was open source i would just pay my roomate a couple bucks to code this for me.

oh well.
back to the cut and paste marathon....

If only ^^ There'd be so much that 3rd party programmers could do if it was open source.. be a lot of fugged up OS's about sure but shame there aint a user group with Akai doing quality control on what comes in or something....

But back to original subject... i know exactly what ya saying punchdrunk. Itll be much better the way u described. I dont know why they didnt do that in the first place.. hopefully we'll see this in a not so distant update... if not.. we'll have to kick up a fuss :P

no joke. man, if i knew there was someone worth screaming at about this i would be on the phone right now. but me being an average nobody, i would probalbly just be screaming at some 18 year old desk receptionist at akai.

...and that wouldn't really get anybody anywhere.

peace.

that sounds pretty good actually, the play feature would be tricky (how far back? play the bar? ) also you would need a parameter to change the timing correct resolution in that window you describe. Still a bit redundant tho, and I don't think it would save you time. The way I see where my hits need to be is scroll back to another bar to where it lands well, (2 seconds) scroll back to where the hit is (2 seconds) cut, scroll back or forward to the right tick (2 seconds) paste. 6 seconds flat!!

yeah i was trying to imagine how the play feature would know where to start from. if it had to be from the beginning of the bar or sequence, so be it.

as for the timing correct, i think whatever you had it set at in the main step edit screen should just apply here. no need for another t.c. option. and obviously if you had timing correct off in the step edit screen then you could move the event to whatever exact time you wanted.

this would definitely save me time.

and what you were saying about scrolling back to another bar to reference what the right time would be is cool, except it doesnt help when i'm doing changeups and alternate beats for the same song. i have no other bars to reference to.

later.

You get a feel for the numbers after a while, you will be able to tell where the hit needs to be if it's later or earlier.

Yo elmacaco, I gotta what you were saying about the arrows and the jog wheel in the step edit screen. I never used both at the same time before. It has taken MAD time off of my step editting. Thanks for the tip.

And for the rest of the people that hate the 1000's step edit, remember you have to approach this machine differently than you would software or any other hardware sampler. Once you rid your mind of old way you used to do SH!T, then you'll start making some iller SH1T.

Ever since I got the 1000 I had to totally rethink how I sample and my entire approach to making beats. It has been mad challenging (since I have been learning Protools, and also incorporating synths all at once), but my beats have drastically improve.

The 1000 is iller than you know.

i feel what you are saying. but i still think what i'm talking about (as far as just moving a single event) is such a basic feature for a sequencer, i couldn't believe they didnt include it. i know there are some workarounds to get by this feature missing, but still there's nothing nearly as easy or functional as what i was talking about.

ehh, this definitely wouldn't have been a deal breaker for me but if i knew about this while i was shopping for a 1000 i might have taken a step back and rethought things out.

By elmacaco Tue May 11, 2004 4:38 am
uh, there is no feature missing, the cut paste isnt a workaround. it is like a software sequencer, you can copy & paste but say they left off the drag? They really didn't tho with the shift timing feature, but just cuz you can't do it that way with one note does not mean anything is missing, it is just different. The copy paste feature is useful for much more as well. Instead of stopping at the limitation, adapt to it and you'll see the genius of the mpc. Well, what's left of the Roger Linn genius after Akai got through it!!

i'm not stopping at the limitation.
i'm just complaining cause i deal with it like everytime i try and edit my sequences (which is pretty much everyday).

i was just honestly surprised when i went to step edit there was no straightforward way of doing this.

oh well.
whatever.

...and by the way, i've been sold on the genius of the mpc for a long time.

peace!

By elmacaco Tue May 11, 2004 6:07 am
cool. I didn't mean to be harsh.

The MPC isn't well suited to step programming, and there fore you lose the advantages of that approach in the editing. I rarely need to edit, I play them in how I can, with TC or without. if there are a few hits off, I'll edit.
