Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

Is it possible for me to layer up patterns and riffs from my SH-201 using the sounds i've created on it via MIDI?

What i'm looking to do is record MIDI live using overdub into a looping sequence, but I want to record my synth patches and i'm not sure if MIDI can transfer that information.

Thanks

You could probably send the patch information if the sh201 can do a midi scene send. If so, set up your midi track in the mpc and use step edit to record the midi patch information at the first tic of the sequence. Then set the next track to the same midi channel and record the riff. If you want to change the patch, just repeat the process at a different point in the sequence.

If the SH sends and recieves sysex (system exclusive) data this is possible, but it may cause the sequence to glitch a little (it does on my MPC 2000), because it freezes up for a split second while it sends the sysex information.

If this happens, it is probably better to use program change - or use a separate empty sequence at the start of each new track.
