The card is good for storing the samples you need for a song or two.

The hard drive is good for storing samples as a general library. For example, I have a 40gig sample library I have put together sitting on my harddrive... when I want a sample for a song, I just look for samples right from the MPC without having to browse them on a computer and copy them over. Most of the samples will never get used in a song, but it is nice have access to them any time I need them!

People who keep their MPC constantly connected to their PC probably don't need to worry about the HD. Those who want access to everything on the go should probably invest in the HD.

Don't forget you can get pretty big CF cards for pretty cheap these days. I like to use the CF card because when it fills up, it forces me to back my projects up to the computer (which I need to do anyway).

I use a 20gb hd and it works great for me.

I have a 60 gig HD and a 2 gig CF just in case something crazy were to happen to my HD and I couldn't save my work. My blank programs are saved on CF to reduce wear on my HD.
