has anyone successfully done this? I mean, buy a new 1000, open it up, transplant the pads, sensors, and pad frame into your old 1000, and then return the one you just bought with your bad pads inside?

Is it possible?

Cause I'm about to move about 3 miles away from a Guitar Center...

yes, but you're better off using an online distributor, like ams or musiciansfriend. the more hands it passes through from akai to you, the less culpable you are, theoretically. if they give you any trouble, akai's offical stance is that the mpc 1000 does not ship with the new pads, so either someone is lying to you, a loyal customer, or they are seriously mistaken.

and no matter what happens, your broken pads will end up on akai's doorstep, because the distributor can just send back defective product to the manufacturer. they'll "upgrade" the pads, (which they should've done anyway) repackage the unit and resell it. everyone is happy. :)

It won't get sent back to Akai until someone buys the one that has been returned and realizes that they've been duped

Otherwise it will just go right back on the showfloor at GC for re-sale at full price

so someone else buys it... they realize the pads are broken and they return it for a new one. the retailer still sends it back to akai, eventually.

but like i said, this isnt the kind of thing you wanna try to work out face-to-face. the guy at GC (who stands to lose his commission if you return it) could pop it open right there and check the pads, since he's more likely to be aware of the problem than some schlep taking in dozens of packages a day at the distributor's massive warehouse. you can still say that akai officially states that new 1000's dont ship with the upgrade, but a call center salesperson isnt gonna bother hassling you, they're trying to get you off the phone as quickly as possible. use online anonymity to your advantage.

aint this a forum full of hip hop heads? get yours, man. ;)

I know it's a bit of an **** thing to do in the first place

but do you really think the guy would notice? I mean, seems to me all he would do is check to see that I returned the same serial # unit, that it has the manuals and cables, etc.

Just cause the guy works there doesn't mean he's going to be an expert on the machine

I could always plead ignorance as well and just be like "What?! Old pads... that's preposterous! I don't even know what you're talking about I thought this was a new unit!"

he wouldn't know. he couldn't be bothered to check.

futhermore as stated akai's response is that the machines are not shipped with new pads

note, in japan the product is listed as different, the bk-n
bk-ns are not listed here. they're just in among the rest of them.

see, I was going to do the pad swap thing, but my conscience got the best of me and felt guilty about it.

sooo, I hope I am not so small a person that Akai gets what they deserve for not taking care of their customers...

this really is a pretty victimless deal: the distributor doesnt lose any money, anyone who buys the unit after you is still covered under warranty, and when you think about it, you're not even really screwing over akai. they'll get the unit with bad pads back, they'll pop in the "upgrade" and resell it. basically, all you're doing is taking advantage of the fact that the distributor can force akai to take back damaged goods- because you, as an individual customer, dont have that kind of clout.

Eh well... whatever you do, just don't give them more money for an MPD24. Why bother anyway? Korg Pad Control has wayyyy better feel and response (better than the trigger finger too, IMHO).

The pad switch thing has been brought up before, and I liked it at first, and then I felt it was the wrong thing to do, but now I feel that me moving within 3 miles of a Guitar Center is some kind of fate and it is my destiny for me to get my pads by any means, so I'm most likely going to pull the switcheroo...

Hopefully it doesn't have too big of an impact on my karma haha

(too bad I can't switch out the faceplate for a black one though -- I think that would be too obvious)
